Can I ask for paid sick days to be transferred to personal paid leave/vacation days? RSS feed

I have been with my families (nanny share) for a year, and the contract states that I get 5 sick days.

I never use sick days, and never will be able to...it's not like I can just call in the morning and tell my employers that I'm not coming in.

When I am sick...I still come to work!

Can I ask for the sick days to become paid vacation days? Or can I ask for the 5 days ($200/day per my salary) to be cashed out for money?

Has anyone ever done this before?

Since you'll be revisiting the contract, ask for PTO instead of a differentiated vacation vs sick. They may not want to convert the full 5, but worth asking.

You can ask. Usually, though, sick days are "just in case" days. They may not be able to manage another full week of covered time off.

Do you get much vacation/pto already?

Sick Leave and Vacation days are not viewed the same in MB's eyes. It is assumed, that you may not take all sick days if you are not sick or is well enough to work. Therefore, 5 sick days may be given, with the expectation that you'll only need a few.

However, you have been there for a year and you can renegotiate. If they are happy with the arrangement and your nannying, I think they would be happy to give you more vacation days and take away some sick days.

Ask it can't hurt imo! At our 1 year mark, I changed my nanny from 2 week vacation/1 week sick to 3 weeks paid time off (with one week still our choosing).

We put in our contract that the nanny gets four sick days, if needed. They do not roll over. They ONLY get paid out if nanny is actually sick.

So our answer, based on the contract both parties signed would be no.

I think it's fine to ask as long as you approach as a negotiation as an increase in benefits. We also gave our nanny plenty of sick days anticipating most of them would not be used. In my mind, sick days almost work more like insurance; they are there to protect against loss of income if you do get ill, but in most cases you won't need the benefit.

I wouldnt ask.

Most employers you have to accrue vacation days but sick days are available right away so you have to keep that in mind.

If your bosses refuse to pay you out your sick days or as vacation days, I would just go ahead and call in "sick," giving them plenty of notice and take the day(s) off. Everyone can use a few mental health days.

We have it structured that sick days are covered under personal time days. I have never been too sick to work but I do need the personal time for dentist/doctor/car maintenance etc.

If I don't get sick in the whole year always she's agree with me to extended my my vacations and of corse payded.

One reason I might not agree to this is what happens whrn you really do get sick, OP? I want you to use the sick days if you need them, not save them for a longer vacation or money at the end of the year.

We were burned by a nanny who wanted all her time in PTO, took it all as extra vacation, and then, when she got legitimately sick, wanted even more PTO to cover her sick days. Not cool. Now we separate vacation and sick and do not roll over either. That said, I expect her to take her sick days and do not judge her reasons. In other words, she can take a sick day as mental health day or a day for appointments, or whatever. But I expect them to be taken 1-2 at a time and when she is out of them, she is out of them. It's unpaid time off if she gets sick and doesn't plan her sick time well.
