Asked to pay ???

I've been waiting to start a new nanny position for about 3 months, my new position starts in August . My next door neighbors are a young couple with 2 children. Once they found out that I was unemployed they asked if I would watch their children on Monday's, Wednesday's and Friday's for free until I start my new job in August. I agreed and thought of this as charity and a way to give back since I had the time to help out. Everything has gone great. I can get the kids and I in for free at our local pools because I used to work there. I've taken them to the lake and other fun outings. I've also helped with housework like laundry and General clean up like dishes and vacuuming.
However last night the mom was arrested due to a DUI. She is still in jail. The dad asked me if I could loan them 5,000. I'm kinda shocked he would ask me to do this. I told him that I thought you only had to pay 500 or 10% of someone's bail. However I really don't know as I've never been arrested. I never really gave him an answer though. I kinda just said I thought you only had to pay 10% now I'm a little worried he will expect me to pay it ??? |

| If this post is real - get out. That woman is not your family or responsibility. I would of never agreed to babysit for free and no way in hell would I give them 5k. The mom needs to learn a lesson on responsibility. |

I agreed to watch the children until August so I have 5 days left. After that they know I can't anymore I just hope the dad doesn't think by me saying it should only be 500 and not 5000 that I was offering to pay it. I was completely caught off guard. |

| Tell them no you don't have the money due to being unemployed and working for them for free and they should have the money since they haven't been paying childcare all this time. Shut it down. |

| Please do not pay them a cent. If anything they should be paying you! You did them a favor by helping them out and now they are just taking advantage. They have no right asking for that kind of money. Please do not feel obligated to help them out anymore as you have already done enough for them. |

| If you want to GIVE them $5,000, do so because you will never give it back. As you were crazy enough to give them free child care then you are probably stupid enough to give them $5,000. |

I'm not going to give them any money. I just don't want him to think I might. I didn't shut it down like I should have when I was asked because I was so shocked. I hope I didn't get his hopes up. I'm just second guessing my words and feeling anxious. |

This is what I'm worried about. I try to go above and beyond for their family. I give their children and home the same care I would if I was being paid. I show up 5 minutes early each day. But I'm not a complete sucker. I'm not giving him 500 or 5000 that's just ridiculous |
