Does anyone know if there are implications to hiring 2 nannies (in terms of taxes, unemployment, workers comp)? Our wonderful nanny needs to work fewer hours and we'd like to hire an afternoon nanny to pick up the hours she can't do, but are not sure if there are problems with that that we're unaware of.

If you use a payroll service their fees will likely change, and some legalities around the ability to provide health insurance reimbursement as a nontaxable benefit may change.

If nanny number two lives in a different state, you may also incur a small tax registration fee. Also, if you use a payroll servIce, they might charge an additional registration fee. Then again, if nanny number one is no longer earning overtime, you will save a ton. |
You will have to pay UI for both up to the max. So, I believe you pay UI on the first $7500 of pay in MD; if you have one nanny, you'll only pay it for her. If you have two, you'll pay it for the second also. UI is usually pretty cheap, though.
Worker's Comp depends on the state. In MD, it was mostly based on annual pay, so the two nannies should come to the same as one working full time. Where I am now, in GA, I pay by the person for domestic employees, so two doubles the worker's comp rate. All other taxes are income-based, so would be the same. If your original nanny was getting overtime, I imagine two nannies, neither receiving overtime, would more than pay for the additional UI. |
In DC workers comp depends on the number of employees.
My rate is based upon three employees: a nanny (FT rate), a once a week housecleaner (PT rate), and a sporadic babysitter (for whom we pay taxes, PT rate). |
Please don't do this to either nanny/kids. It's really hard for the kids in terms of consistency.

NP here. I wouldn't count on a lack of OT discount. Despite legalities, I think most people mentally count on an average or weekly rate. And, honestly it seems like the right way to treat someone. If you are planning to reduce her pay further by removing guaranteed overtime, I'd definitely have an explicit conversation befurehand. |
COmpletely agree with 6:47. You might find that you are looking for 2 nannies instead of one if you don't discuss this with her PRIOR to searching for and hiring another nanny. |

Fear the drama of the nannies. We are two nannies working am, pm consecutively and I hated it, kissing ass and showing off to the boss. Annoying!!! |
