Forced To Come In On Weekend... RSS feed

Anonymous
I am a 24/5 Nanny, and they have a 24/2 weekend nanny. On Sunday my boss called me and said I have to come in and work because she sent sick weekend home. She went on further to say that I'm the "nanny manager" and I need to ensure that kids have 24/7 care, she doesn't want to deal with it. I told her I really don't want to come in on my precious day off. She said I need to, because it's my responsibility.

Do you think it's my responsibility or hers?

Hers.

Unless you specifically agreed to come in on weekends too, she is way out of line.

I do not like her wording here, that you are "supposed" to do this and that and that it is your "responsibility." What nerve.

I must warn you that if you decide to decline (and you would be well within your rights to do so!) I get a strong suspicion that she will most likely fire you for this.

She sounds like she wants everything her way or the highway and if you do not do as she instructs, she will have no issue handing you your walking papers.

Good luck and sorry you have to deal with this nonsense.

If you are the nanny manager, then technically yes you would be the one covering. I personally would have at least 1 or 2 people that you could call to cover in case of sickness.

24 hour jobs are hard and much different than a regular nanny job. You can't really understand unless you have been in one (I have)

Do your job and either find someone or go in. You signed up for it.

How old are you, OP?

It depends on whether any of this is specified in a contract/work agreement.

If it isn't then it's her problem, if it is then it may be your problem.

Either way it sounds like you need to have a sitdown w/ your boss.

Get a new job.

No nanny gets ordered to work on her day off.

They should have never had kids, I'd they want to pay other people to raise them

This. It all depends on what the contract says.

OP here- I never signed on to be this "nanny manager" , but the parents don't want to be involved with scheduling and hiring. So when it came to hiring a new weekend person, I was bestowed this new title and responsibility, without a salary boost.

I am just livid at myself that I went in. I work over 110hrs a week, I shouldn't have to work an additional 24. Yes I got paid, but I really need to rest. The parents really should have either found someone else or cancelled there plans to look after their kids.

What exactly do you mean you need to rest? I the kids are getting 9+ hours of sleep a day then you should too. Just because you are there for 24 hours you can't say you are "working" when you are sleeping. Just be grateful you are being paid to sleep.

You've clearly never been on call.

Then have a conversation with the parents about a raise or quit. But, be prepared to be fired if they expect this to be part of your job and you refuse.

Your third option, of course, is just to vent here and carry on. I'm going to assume that's what you're doing.
