I feel as though I have had near constant colds since becoming a nanny two years ago. I practice all preventative measures - hand washing, hand washing of charges hands, eating well, getting aerobic exercise, etc. but have had one cold after another for the last two years.
I have to take my charge to classes (Music Together and Mommy & Me) as well as playgrounds and library playrooms where we are both exposed to other little kids but I am getting more colds than he is. Do I start to get a super immunity soon? I have a friend who said she was constantly sick the first year she taught preschool but then never again after that. |
| Oh, I know, OP - little kids are cute little germ bags! I does get better after a few years (or else I just stopped noticing colds). |
+1 |
| Are you getting outside enough? |
Not OP but I am in Southern California and am outside with my charges 365 days a year for at least three hours a day -- and still got the new nanny colds! Yes, OP, it does get better and you don't get as many colds. Hang in there. |
| I've been a nanny for 15 years. I typically get 1 sickness per year. This year I did get a bad stomach bug and had vomitting and diarrhea for 2 days. Last year I got strep. But for the most part I'm very healthy. |
Lucky you. |
| Have you always been the kind of person who catches every bug that goes around? If so, it may not get better; some people are just more susceptible. |
| I take care of myself and therefore don't get sick. I often sit with sick kids and read together snuggled up while they have fever and coughing. It's amazing what eating right and being active can do. |
OP here and I used to be stunningly. I eat very well and run every day. Still, being a nanny, I have had nearly constant colds since I started. |
I mean "stunningly healthy"... |

Have you tried boosting your immune system? Drinking enough water? Just trying to brainstorm some ideas.
I've been a nanny for 10 years and have only ever got the occasional cold. |

Don't forget OP that in addition to plenty of hand washing/sanitizing, etc., that you also keep your hands away from your face. Also, do not share any food, drink or eating utensils w/your charge.
This system seems to work for me. Perhaps for extra insurance, you can also take Airborne to offer preventative care as well. Hope this helps out. |
