I currently nanny for a little one whose just hit 6 months and I want to be double sure I'm getting her feeding right
She currently has 7.30am milk feed (1) 7oz 11am milk (2) 6oz around 12 she has a 'solids' feed 3pm milk (3) 6oz 6.30 last milk feed (4) 7oz. Is the next step to introduce another feed between milk feeds 3 and 4? She is happily taking about two tablespoons of food 95% of the time, and I think she could probably eat more but I haven't wanted to over dill her little tum! Thanks |

I am assuming the "milk" is breast milk? I would continue to increase her solids. A baby will not allow you to "over feed" them with solids.
MB here. |
| What does the baby's mother have to say?! She should be the one drawing up the feeding schedule and not you. |
What an unnecessary and unhelpful thing to say. Shocking. The baby's mother might not know herself and is asking for the input of the person who implements the schedule more regularly. Baby should still be taking 19-30 oz of milk a day. At this point, solids are really just to expose the baby to new things and develop the associated motor skills...this isn't an area you should be counting on a significant portion of his/her nutrition from. It is different for each baby but I would go with PP's suggestion and try to add another solid during the day and keep your other schedule the same. |
No, I am sorry but I disagree. The mother should have had this discussion with the baby's pediatrician. And I do believe that it should be the mother's decision. I'm sorry if you found my response unnecessary and unhelpful but that is my opinion and I stand by it. This is not for the nanny to decide -- especially when she hasn't enough experience to know the answer without posting on a nanny forum. |
I've seen plenty of overweight babies. |
Overweight is NOT overfed. Come on, are you all first time nannies on this thread this morning? |
+1 I agree 100%. An inexperienced nanny has no business making this call (and an experienced nanny wouldn't need to ask this question). |
How do you know it's a nanny who made the statement? |
| Is that really the baby's last feed for the day at 6:30? One solid though at this age is fine and babies can absolutely overeat on solids so ignore that PP. |
Total nonsense. MB here and a nurse - babies cannot overeat. |
| Nonsense about overweight babies. My baby was 28 |
|
Nonsense about overweight babies. My child was 28 lbs at 8 months and the ER docs brought in a nutritionist to tell me my baby was overweight. They even called our pediatrician and she laughed in their faces. He was just a big baby...from birth. He was eating fruit, veggies and breastmilk. Was I supposed to quit nursing him? Anyway, he got skinny as soon as he learned to walk.
To answer OPs question, you can certainly add another feeding. I would do one in the am and one in the evening tho. By 9 months, baby should be eating 3 solids a day. Primary source of nutrition is still milk so make sure she's still taking in her normal amount of milk. |
FYI, lots of mothers expect the nanny to figure it out. You must have just fallen off the turnip truck, huh? |
No, Dear, I have been around long enough to know that even an inexperienced nanny with a FTM should have the common sense to call the pediatrician and not depend on the "advice" of a bunch on anonymous posters (many of whom have clearly never been parents or nannies) on an internet message board. |
