I might go back to work after my maternity leave just part-time, in which I'll only need a nanny three days a week. I've heard it's hard to find a PT nanny b/c most want full time work.So what's the best way to find someone PT? Should I go through an agency? Other suggestions? TIA! |
I found good part-time nannies both through care.com and an agency. It's more work on your end through care, much more expensive through the agency (but they can also find you back-up care).
My experience has been that nannies looking for part time work are not going to be in it for the long term, however; most are doing part time because of other commitments (their own children, school, etc.). If their circumstances change, they either leave nannying or want a full time gig. So, my point is, you can find someone great, but you might need to find someone new every year or so. My other suggestion is to make sure that you hire for more than the minimum number of hours you need. I'm assuming that as the part time worker, you'll take on more of the child-care/domestic tasks, and a few extra nanny hours each week will help make it possible to run errands, schedule appointments (doctor or salon), workout, etc.. |
Thanks! |
I echo PP's comments above and would add that it is easier to find a part-time nanny is you know the exact days and hours you will need her and guarantee those days/hours. M-W-F 7AM to 5PM for example. There is a chance she could book another gig for Tuesdays and Thursdays. |
We found the world's greatest nanny on care.com. Honestly, it was probably luck but she has been with us for over two years and hopefully will stay with us for another 8 years. |
Yes, this is key. When I first started looking for a part time person, I didn't know which days I would be working, and got very few responses to my ad. As soon as I could list the specific days and times, I got lots of responses. Guaranteed hours is also important if you want someone who will stay awhile. |
Nanny here and I mostly agree with what has been posted. You can find a great nanny through an agency, the care sites, or a list serve.
A list serv might be a great option in your case you might be be able to connect with a family seeking a part time share etc. I am a nanny that only works part time by choice. 50 + hour weeks are not for me. We do exist! I've been with my current family over a year. The key is you nee to know what you want and need. |
