Part-time Nanny Benefits RSS feed

We are hiring a part-time nanny for 2 days a week, 20 hours total. What are the general benefits a part-time nanny gets? Paid vacation time? Sick days?

Thanks for any help on this! We want to offer something reasonable but unsure of the general standard for part-time.

The only benefit I would give a part-time nanny is guaranteed hours.

Why don't you simply ask her what she prefers?

-Guaranteed hours
-Some form of PTO for emergencies

I've had a few part-time positions that DID NOT offer this, and I can say I had little hesitation when choosing to leave them.

Part time nanny here - 25 hours / 5 days a week. I receive guaranteed hours, 5 days PTO, and 9 paid holidays. Since your job is only 2 days/week I would probably offer guaranteed hours and a few days PTO.

You decide how long you'd like her to stay.
The more you offer, the longer she stays.
Simple.

For extreme part time like what you need, I look for guaranteed hours.

OP here.

Well, I decided to offer 20 guaranteed hours, 1 week (20 hours) vacation, 20 hours sick leave, plus major fed holidays that fall on scheduled work days.

I don't know...I'd like to keep the nanny long term and we will survive offering this.

That's a very generous package, OP.

That's a great package. I had something similar in a longtime share of 5 years. I still have great relationships with all the families. In fact, I'll be seeing "all my children (as the parents like to call them), at a Valentines day event for kids. My mum always said, to start anything as you wish to continue. You're off to a good start.

This is one reason that I resigned from my last job. I was part time and got no benefits. If I was sick, I had to owe hours or loose pay. I chose to owe hours. I also told them that if the weather was bad enough where the kids didn't have school then I probably wasn't able to get there. So then I didn't owe because it was a weather issue. I think that part time nannies should receive vacation and sick days too.

This is a great offer! I hope you find someone wonderful and committed.

I'd caution you about being too hopeful with regards to keeping a long-term nanny at 20hr/wk, though, unfortunately.

A young college student will have a changing schedule each term; an older one will graduate. A nanny with another PT job may be looking for a FT package and leave once she's found it. Likewise with an unemployed nanny who takes your position but keeps looking for FT. I'd think your best bet is with an older nanny or one who has another PT+ position (30+hr) that offers her the benefits she'd otherwise need from a FT position? Maybe other employers can offer their input on that, or how they found a PT nanny who stayed long-term. Good luck OP!
