The area where I live has accumulated about 2ft of snow ( I don't live in DC). My home is not too far from work but I had to stay at my mothers which is about 30 minutes away. Well over here the snow is very bad. Barely anything has been plowed. I rely on public transportation and that is mostly shut down in my moms area. I can't get a taxi either. Schools and most businesses have closed due to the weather.
I was due to work at 8:30 but I couldn't get there. I had to shovel my way out of my home this morning. Since no transportation is viable, I can at get to work. I have been updating MB & DB every hour or so. They suggested the bus but its been shut down. This is a new job and I love it and don't want to screw up. I am currently walking which will take about an hr or more to get to a bus closer to their home. They are barely responding back. I have told them I will work unpaid OT for the hours I miss but I am not getting paid for the work I missed anyway today. I don't know if I should try and walk there ( could take 2.5 -4 hours) or tell them I can't make it but offer OT. I'm honestly afraid I will be fired if I tell them I can't go in. They still want me to come in and I'm trying my best but failing miserably. Nannies - What would you do? MB's - why would you expect? 02/02/2015 11:58 Subject: I can't get to work - WWYD? I work until 5 and may not get there until 1-3pm. |

Wow. I am so sorry. What state?
Seems like there's something wrong with these people telling you to come in these conditions. Seriously. How will you get home in the night? Seems crazy. |
Chicago. We had a massive storm hit yesterday. |
| Stay home! I can't believe they expect you to come in. I doubt they are paying you enough to walk 4 hours. Girl reread what you wrote! Why would you offer to make up those hours? Are you God? Is this your fault? Surely they have eyes and see the snow. Your employers are selfish. |
| Yeah, these parents are nuts. |
| Take care of yourself, OP. There's got to be a better job for you. |
| You don't sound very smart. Really? Walk for 4 hours in a snowstorm? You deserve to be fired for complete lack of common sense. |
They are actually very amazing people. They both have work but are working from home, I believe. They live in a townhome association so they don't have to shovel or plow their own snow. This job hasn't started out the way I planned. I ended up missing 4 days in 5 weeks due to unexpected illness. I am afraid I will be fired if I don't make it to work. |
It's no longer snowing. There is just massive amounts of snow everywhere. Besides the snow, the weather is ok. So do I tell them I can't come in and risk being fired? I really do love them. They have been so understanding with my illness and missing days so far. I feel like I'm disappointing them. DB then corrected me and told me a bus route to take. Only problem is that bus has been shut down although it shows normal bus routes, its not actually running. They have only confirmed they received my texts or say " ok". They haven't told me to stay home. |

MBS TAKE NOTE.
When you hire a nanny you need to try to figure out how reliable that nanny will be and that means taking into account maturity (knowing that they need to work even in the snow or rain), intelligence (not going 30 minutes away to your moms the night of a large snowstorm leaving you stranded from work), transportation (are they too poor to afford a car?), and other things. Otherwise this will be your nanny. |
Does anyone ever notice it's always the same thing with these nannies. "I just started this job but then had a very serious illness and needed to miss 3 days, then a relative died and I took 2 more days, now it's snowing and I can't go in today. HELP I don't want to be fired!" |
You were supposed to be at work 2ish hours ago and you still haven't let them know your plans? Expect to be fired, and rightly so. |
I have been updating them this whole time. They just aren't responding. |
| They must be responding if the dad boss took the time to look up a different route. Please, continue with your made up excuses. See how far it gets you in life. |
| why would they respond?! Everytime they get a text from you at this point, they are simply rolling their eyes. grow up, OP. This is a job. |
