For Christmas, MB got me a photo printer that hooks up to a cell phone. it is a very thoughtful gift, because I scrapbook and would definitely end up making a lot of prints. The problem is that I plan to upgrade my cell phone within the next month or two, and it doesn't work with the upgraded version of my phone. normally, I would just say a gracious thank you (which I did) and then quietly resell or regift it, but I would hate for her to notice that I was still using prints that say target on the back when I do projects with the kids that include photos. should I mention that it is incompatible with my new phone, and if so, should I offer to let her return it or simply let her know that I appreciated the gesture but passed it on to someone who was able to use it? I would really hate for her to notice that I was not able to use it and feel badly that her gift did not work out.

What is my best bet for avoiding hurt feelings here?

I think I would tell just what you said here.

Can you exchange it for one that works with the new phone?

I don't have a gift receipt and have no idea where she got it. The closest I could come would be to sell it on craigslist or something, but I probably wouldn't buy another right now, since I am moving cross-country in 6 months and trying to downsize.

MB here - I'd want you to tell me. I think you're exactly right about the awkwardness if she realizes you're not using it but doesn't know why.

I'd just say the same thing you said here - you don't want her to feel like you don't appreciate her thoughtful gift but here are the facts, hope you understand - and thanks again, you're so thoughtful and I'm so glad to have you as my MB.

If you tell her, she'd probably give you the receipt to exchange it for something else from the store. Just say what you posted here
