Please stop trying to artificially inflate wages RSS feed

Nannies, please stop trying to inflate wages beyond their normal $12-14/hr by making inane and repetitive posts on this forum. Even the state in this area will only pay $11.47/hr for people to care for children with special needs through medicare. $14/hr is far beyond generous. And $18, $20, or $22/hr to care for babies sleeping half the day and to do some tummy time is just absurd. Holding out for these rates explains why you are unemployed and sitting on DCUM all day every day.

Thank you friends.

When this forum goes back to normal I will gladly stop. All you need to do is stop telling people $20 an hour is an acceptable rate to drive one child from school to soccer practice. Stop telling people $18 an hour is normal for someone to come help 1 hour in the mornings get a kid ready for school. Stop trying to tell people $22 an hour is ok for nannying.

I'm a nanny for teenagers and get paid $24/h. Do I think all nannies should automatically raise their rates to $24? Nooooooo.
It all depends on what is value to a family. Longevity, security, confidentiality, experience, trust, etc. In all fairness I am in CT so the rates might be different. But the point is, $20 is happening and just because you've never seen it, doesn't mean it isn't there. Just because YOU (or whomever) find it outrageous, doesn't mean another family won't find value in it and have resources to afford it.

That's what I make! Do you want me to lie?
My experience, education and certifications make my time valuable.
If you don't want to pay that, then don't!
JUST. STOP.

There will always be nanny jobs at all ends of the spectrum salary wise. Comparing nanny jobs to what the State pays through Medicare is just silly.

Just because you and your friends pay $10-$12/hr, doesn't mean that there aren't people paying $20-$22/hr. Everyone has different priorities and will pay more for different things (education, experience, etc.) If you are happy with the quality of care you are receiving at $10/hr, why are you worried about the people paying $18/hr?

I know my current family values education and wanted a nanny with a degree and extensive nanny experience. They also believe it's important for their nanny to be able to live comfortably on the salary they pay.

This!

OP, why are you threatened by nannies that make $15+ an hour?

No ones saying those rates aren't out there. I'm sure theres some celebrity somewhere paying $100 an hour for their nanny, that has absolutely no bearing on this. Were talking average rates. When someone in DC posts on this forum asking for advice they should be told an average rate, such as $12 an hour. The posters on here are doing everyone a disservice by telling parents they must pay $20 an hour to be able to find someone, and then shaming people that can only afford $10/hr into believing having a nanny is a luxury for the 1% and they should just stuff their kids in daycare.

Truth is a $10/hr nanny is not a crime. Some people can live comfortable and happily on $10 an hour and be good at their job and be reliable and trustworthy. If they want to work for it and the family wants to pay it why can't you let everyone be happy. $10 or $12 or $14 an hour are not slave wages.

Having a nanny is a luxury though.
You are not helping parents by making them believe it is easy to find, hire and keep a high caliber nanny at $10 an hour.
A nanny is an expense, better they have a realistic view of what it costs beforehand than jumping into find they are in over their head and then post here desperately looking for a share family or a gift to entice their nanny to stay longer even though they can't afford it

Have you ever lived on $10/hour? Until you have, shut it.
A nanny is a luxury and paying someone $10/hour to do so is exploitative.
The truth is, the average wage hourly rate in the DC area IS around $15/hour.

Why do teenagers need a nanny?

As for OP, go back to your sewer hole. I am not a nanny but if I were, I would not even consideration to anything less than $20/hr for talking care of kids.

OP, why does one person get to dictate what gets said with respect to nanny salaries on this forum? Unless you have a phd in nanny salaries or you have done some statistically reliable survey, your opinion is no more or less valuable than anyone else.

This is a forum for all areas. I believe that is why it was moved to it's own tab (shoot me if I'm wrong about that, but I remember that there were tons of nannies from everywhere). So just assuming that people are posting for the dc area is silly.

By the way I work for a celebrity, not in DC, and no I don't make $100/hr (that's just a ridiculous amount you stated). But I also don't make $10/hr. I won't say or give a round about amount I make.
I will say I earn the amount I deserve. I have a bachelor's degree in education, I also have a newborn care specialist certificate, I have worked with celebrities for over 10 yrs and know how to work with them and their needs, I know French, Spanish and sign language. I am a certified lifeguard. I specialize in multiples. I could go on. But yes I am paid what I am worth for the years I have spent in this field and what I can offer my clients.
