Is $18/hr a good rate for this job? RSS feed

2 kids, ages 6 and 3; about 36 hours a week (4 days a week, 1 set day off weekly), from 7am-4pm. Older child is in school from 8:45-3:45, younger child is in preschool 2 mornings a week, so most of the time it's just one child with 5-6 hours a week of no kids unless one is sick. Offering guaranteed hours, 2 weeks vacation, 1 week PTO/sick leave. Minimal housekeeping--kid laundry, picking up some toys, emptying the dishwasher.

We have been paying $18 an hour for this. Does this seem fair?

This is more than fair. Where are your doubts coming from?

MB here. That sounds extremely fair and competitive to me.

OP again. Our current nanny is leaving (for life reasons, not for money reasons) and in the process of looking for someone new we're hearing that people are making $20/hour. This seems awfully high to me for someone who is mainly watching one (potty-trained, somewhat independent) child, with very little in the way of housekeeping duties. But I wanted to see if I needed a reality check.

Hell yes!

Yes. It's a very good rate.

OP again.
DC area.

It's fine to secure you a real basic mostly OK nanny.

That sounds like good compensation for a experienced nanny OP. My only suggestion is to clearly define what dishes you expect her to do. When I was hired by my current nanny family they said they needed help with dishes. Apparently to them "helping" with dishes actually means doing it all. We've had talks about it and she agreed I didn't need to do it all. But I can tell she's not happy about it and I think both of us should have been clearer with exactly what light housework entailes. Good luck, I'm sure you'll find a great nanny.

$18 an hour in the DC is not a very good rate.

Excellent rate for that work load. You'll have tons of really qualified applicants.

She might have tons of applicants, but none will be qualified.

Oh stop. Don't terrify the newbies who aren't used to the trolls here.

OP again. I am honestly wondering what you mean by this?
