How to hire a nanny and what you need to know

My husband and I are considering hiring a nanny but don't know how to go about doing it. For those of you who have done this what are tips you might have to ensure a good fit with your family/children?

Where do you post about it? Do you use sites like sittercity/care/etc? Or do you trust sites like Craigslist?

I would do a background check on whoever we liked...

What are key elements to consider that you might not have realized before hand?

I saw some references to a Nanny contract - what sort of information should be captured there?

Any safety precautions necessary other than a background check?

How do you go about the taxes/social security/withholdings...
