care.com is well known for not giving the correct market rates. For true market rates, I go to White House nannies and see what families are offering. I am a nanny, and so far was able to find the families who pay slightly higher than White house nannies' jobs.
PP who makes 71K and does not get the ACA subsidy, sorry it has been a mess for you! If you put some money for your retirement, about 7K, that will reduce your income, plus you can take a couple of weeks off unpaid.

We live in Chevy Chase MD and pay $26/hr for 40 hrs a week for a nanny who drives. It is for one child and he is not in preschool so she watches him 40 hrs a week. We also contribute a few hundred to her health insurance premium and she uses our car for child activities. I have interviewed many nannies recently and I think $25/hr is the going rate for one child.

A nanny here that got hired through an agency, newborn girl in Friendship Heights, $35 hourly/40 hours guaranteed and legal OT. and $397/monthly health stipend. I would not work for $25 as that was my rate 11 years ago. Food, expenses, rent is very high in MOCO. I also couldn't apply for ACA as it isn't affordable at all if you have underlying conditions-it works for 1 group of folks BUT not for all.

Never heard of $26 in today's time, perhaps before the pandemic but not anymore.

Most families in our CCMD neighborhood are paying $25-$30 for one to two children (yes the moms all talk about it to make sure we’re paying fairly). Don’t let the nanny group on here make you think they are all getting $35/hour!

PP, did you and your friends go though the agency? There is a huge difference both in the quality of care and the hourly rates between the nanny coming through a reputable agency vs the neighborhood listserv nanny. Not to bash those nannies accepting lower wages, and most of them are loving women (though very unhappy looking, from what I see) but obviously, not educated and many not even possessing good English, something I want to see in my nanny. They may be fine taking care of your child basic needs, but will they educate your child? Anyway, I think there is a range of pay and you get what you pay for. Some people want the best and can afford it, so they use the agencies, why not? And yes, there are nannies making $35 an hr for one child.

I recently interviewed a handful of legal nannies I found through word of mouth. Most were $25 for one child and $30+\-$2 for two children. All spoke English well enough for me and varying levels of experience.

Teacher aides with more experience make $20 or less an hour and work a lot harder. We provide vehicle - if not, you need to pay IRS rate per miles driven. I call BS on all the $30-35/hour. We only pay that for temp care in emergencies, not for guaranteed hours.

Not BS for nannies that were hired through agencies such WHN and Adventure N. Nannies set their own rate and wont work for cheap ass folks, FYI.

Those “Moms” aren’t holding demanding jobs and have time in their hands to ask several neighbors to see whats the “fairly rate” Now, moms that actually WORK and hold c-suite/lawyer/doctor/demanding jobs prefer to use an agency and offer decent salaries at REAL TIME rates. Big difference!

LOL I am one of those moms with a demanding job. Used WHN once and never again.

As a nanny that got hired through a reputable agency; I’d be offended if a family offers me $25 hourly. I made $25 hourly with all the benefits back in 2016, people forget how expensive is to live in DC or MD.

Wow. It’s amazing how delusional (and rude) some of you are. Even moms with demanding jobs can get together for happy hour now and then. I used WHN for one nanny and word of mouth for the other. The non-WHN is far superior. Don’t let the agency fees fool you.
