It's just flights, they stay with family.

Yes, but nanny still has to pay her rent, car insurance, etc., here, for 2 months with no income. It can be quite a lot.

Ok, except the nanny is choosing to travel and not work. You expect the family to still pay them?

That is why I am suprised a nanny can afford it.

I find a lot of nannies are unaware of what a white collar professional does. It seems like we sit around and get paid a ton, but are also still available to cover for them whenever they need time off.

Thing is, it’s a competency issue. Nanny can’t typically perform at the level of her employers - hence she’s their employee - but also thinks she works harder than the employer. It’s the age old problem of employing household help and why it’s hard to find good people long-term.

Immediate PP. Submitted too soon. That’s why a nanny would think they should be paid during said 2 month break (either with a higher salary the rest of the year or just comp for the vacation). It’s an insane expectation however.

Funny thing competency, in light of reading comprehension issue. The pp was surprised nannies can afford not to work and obviously NOT to be paid for 2 months, and still go on vacation whoch a lot of people with regular jobs cannot afford.

Or, it could be lifestyle choices. If they are visiting family they are just paying plane/food and they can save for the rent or mortgage and other expenses for a few months.

Easy. Lifestyle choices.

Ours has left twice in a four year period for 2-3 months…it was. A PITA, but we worked out flexible work schedules and grandparents to manage it. I do feel we were very flexible with both trips to hold the job, and I’m not sure it would really fly with other families.

Many other families don't have the ability to be flexible with their work schedules, or grandparents that are capable/willing to care for children.

Our nanny does not save for retirement and carries a balance on several credit cards. When her car was totalled recently, it was a crisis because she had not saved for an emergency.
