Nanny is in the wrong and should return your property.

Very unprofessional, but given she was fired on the spot for just cause I’d say you know that...


Consider it a loss. Next time when firing on the spot make sure you get your belongings before they leave.

DP here. The employer should have collected it before the nanny left. It’s what is commonly done in any dismissal from any company.

Yes, I did offer to pick it up and she declined, saying she would bring it to me. I said she could leave our belongings on her porch.

So I made a complaint to care.com and her profile has been removed. Oddly enough, I received two calls for a reference for her and I told them both what happened.

So overall the financial losses to her are greater. I’m sure she will find some work, somewhere. But we had to change all our locks and then replace the car seat. We won’t make that mistake again.



And how are you not going to let that happen again? Not have a car seat for your child? Not let the new nanny leave the house?

Congratulations, you vindictive witch, you succeeded in ruining this woman’s livelihood over her not rushing to return property that you should have asked for before she left. Your family must be so proud of you.


Please feel free to find any job that allows you to keep company property after your employment ends.

She made her choices to not return our property. She is going to have to deal with the consequences of that. I’m sure other parents would want to know if a nanny they’re going to hire caused her former employer to replace locks and car seat once she left for breach of contract in failure to return the family’s property.

Nannies also deserve to know that you are a controlling employer and tell every nanny they know to steer clear of you.


This outrage is ridiculous. The MB offered to PICK UP the key and carseat, making it very easy for the former nanny. There are plenty of reasons why the key and carseat might not have been returned at the time of termination, that's really not the issue here. If the nanny would like to be treated like a professional, he/she needs to act like a professional and return the employers property. This happens all the time in business! People have to return keycards, parking passes, cell phones, laptops etc after termination and they typically comply.


All of these are collected at time of dimissal, if fired, or on final day if resigning. Whatever the case, OP was wrong to report her mess up her livelihood. I would sue her.

That her employer should have collected the item before she left and not expect OP to break a speed record getting them back after she was fired. Then OP trashed the nanny’s recommendations over a lousy car seat.

Stop. The nanny didn’t steal anything. She just didn’t knock herself out to return a car seat and keys on the woman who just fired her’ time table.

My guess is the nanny got tired of jumping through hoops for this witch and was taking her time.

Interesting that OP didn't call the police to accompany her to nanny's house to retrieve this "oh so valuable" car seat and house keys! Instead, she reports her to care.com. The obvious thing to do if property is stolen is to report to police!

You people are ridiculous!!! OP was 100% in the right.

Any professional returns employers belongings. OP gave multiple options which were all denied. Nanny did not follow through, therefore OP reported her to care.com and in references. If I’m thinking of hiring this person I’d want to know OPs experience.

OP, don’t even think twice about what you did, you saved other families the hassle of dealing with your former nanny.
