Hear hear DC nannies.. time to move to LA!!

Except our rents are crazy (1200 for a house share, 1500 for a studio, etc) has is expensive so is good and the taxes are ridiculous.

Making 30/hr is just covering bills. Once taxes come out you on a 40 hr week you’re looking at 800-900/week.

Rent isn't bad in the valley and it was cheaper to buy so I'm a homeowner. If you're picky and need to be hip in west La or in Santa Monica then I guess you can rent!

I’m actually in the valley and my 1 bed is 1375.

When was the last time you actually looked at rental prices???

1 bed in the valley for 1375 is good. If you don't like it then buy. You can get a mortgage for that.

I also get health/dental, a nanny car and phone paid for. And the normal pto/sick time (21 pto days/5 sick) and the normal major holidays. I have one nk.

But I’m in Los Angeles.
I use Agencies (more than just one)

I’ll be with this job til he starts kindergarten in 2 yrs. we’ll evaluate what’s next (I like full time work, not part time. Normally work 55-60 hrs now).
My next job will be from agencies.

I think I know your family and they can defintely afford it!

The $30 an hour nanny watching one child is a privileged college grad doing little to nothing. Parents would rather have their kids in the care of some people and pay high for it smh. I was a great nanny but the most I ever made was $16.50 and the agency refused to give me a raise after 3 years. Glad I am out of nannying.

Stop. I worked my way through college and graduate school, taught for nearly ten years and work hard to earn $31 an hour as the nanny to one 2.5 yr old. You should have gotten a degree, PP. And certainly switched agencies!

I love being a nanny.

You obviously had an awful agency. Considering agencies don’t pay you, your employer (the child’s parents) pay you.

The agencies Cherry picks who goes to the ludicrous jobs interviews. If you have blue eyes and blond hair yes you will be considered but no I am black. And like I previously said the good paying parents want their kids with certain people. So ladies unless I settled for nanny share I was never going to make $30/h with one family hence why I left altogether.

To the other poster that replied to me; I did not personally address you and you have no idea what level of education I have so I suggest keeping your negativity to yourself.

I make way over 30 an hour and I didn't graduate college. I do have 25 years in this business. I do take classes offered to me (sleep training, car seat, etc. This that constantly change and up date in this business)

It sounds like you went with an awful agency. You know you can be with multiple agencies. I am currently with 12 agencies (locally domestically and internationally). I have never had an agency pay me directly. That is a huge red flag! Agencies make their money from the parents fee.

What are your qualifications? Years of experience? Extra things (languages, skills, trainings)

If you want the higher pay, you need to make yourself stand out. Your resume doesn't have a color or race. It is the first thing a parent sees.

I’m in the Midwest. My hours vary greatly, but have never added up to 40 in one week. I make 52k per year, life, health, bonuses, 401k...everything. Better than I thought as getting as a teacher in a public school. Been w this family only a few months, but salary review every 6. Last week I only worked on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. 9-3:30/4ish. 3 year old twins. I try and do as much as I possibly can for them during the time the kids are napping. When they’re playing independently I will find an area in the playroom or wherever we are and organize/clean up what I can while being only a few feet away from the action.

My last job is paid about the same though without the benefits and the parents were hoarders in a 12,000 sqft home and I was in charge of keeping looking like they were not hoarders. It was supposed to be mostly nanny, some cleaning but it was bad. The girls were older, 3rd and 5th grade and had zero consequences for the most part. The parents would say no and the girls would throw a fit until their answer changed. I’m sure you can imagine. Thank god I was only there a year and I was lucky enough to find this family. They seem like a family who will appreciate everything I do, but we’re still in the honeymoon stage so we’ll see.

Both jobs were through an agency. And yes, both families have millions. This new family may have more. I accidentally saw an ATM receipt from my earlier family. It was one of the mom’s accounts (they have several accounts) and the checking balance was 934k. Not savings, checking. And yes, I remember that number. I wasn’t snooping, we just use the same bank and it was in the car and thought it might be mine. Then I saw the balance, lol.

I would definitely go through an agency. My agency is small, but caters to all the most elite people in the city and has the best reputation. I’ll never go on care.com again because I don’t like being on hourly and in my area 95% of jobs on care are done that way. And the owner of the agency really cares about me as a person, so it’s always nice to be able to call her when I have a questions or need advice. I didn’t take advantage of this when I was with the first family with them, but if something starts to make me nervous, she can “check in” with the family, ask how it’s going and suggest the best way to handle things.

I did find my first ever family via care though, and they’re the best. I only worked for them for 8 months until the youngest started kindergarten. They paid (paid $28/hour) Nd it was pretty close to 40hrs per week. They’re like family now. I’ve flown out just spend time with the girls and the parents and the mom has put them on a plane to see me. Not because they need to be watched because I miss them and they miss me more! We’re trying to sync our vacations for next summer because they want me to come with them to Greece. They’d pay for everything of course, but being with them isn’t anything like being a nanny. I don’t work. I came with them to Aspen this spring and they went out on a date one afternoon/evening, but the girls and I were at the spa getting the works...rainbow hair, facials, massage, nails.

I just have a regular college degree and was a high school teacher for 7 years. Nothing special in that respect. This is my 3rd year being a nanny.

I used.to make $35 as a nanny in NYC. Benefits were nice too and the family was pretty nice. They were extremely wealthy. MB didn't work but was involved in a lot of volunteer organizations and wasn't home much.

The only difficult part of the job was that MB used to take the kids on a lot of vacations (without DB) and would often ask me to go as well. I got paid generously for this and got some additional perks, but it was a lot of "next week I was thinking of heading down to the Bahamas for the week. Would you be able to go?". I really liked MB so I enjoyed the trips, but they started to prevent me from having my own life. I ended up leaving the position after about 2 years but still babysat for them until i moved out of the area.

I was hired by word of mouth. Did some babysitting in college for some wealthy families (originally set up by my roommates mom) and then word of mouth got out. I graduated college in the recession and had a hard time finding a job and one of the moms I babysat for introduced me to MB

Jeez, $30 per hour for one kid?! I kind of get DC (not really but ok). I’m in Montgomery county and outside of parts of Bethesda, $30+ would almost never get considered - there are tons of good nannies in the 12-20 range. Just have t find them!
