Nanny raises after 3 years RSS feed

I have been the MB that did everything I could for my nanny. Paid the most, more than your $21 at some point. Been the nicest, kept my longest for 4 years. Did everything to be the best MB I could be. Be out of the house, let nanny have control, minimize responsibilities, etc etc all so that I hoped my kids would have a good upbringing.

Nannies did not appreciate all I did, I know after all these years. I have stories I could tell you. How they fed my kids chicken nuggets then go home and cook an organic meal for their kids, etc etc etc. It's just not worth it is my opinion after all these years. They do not make that much of a difference in the kids' lives to pay more than others to try to keep them for years. The best nanny that my kids like is the high school student because she played the most with them. She truly loves my kids with her innocent heart and my kids know it. They never ask about my nanny who was with me for 4 years.

Sounds like sour grapes. Who got burned after the 4 years? You or the nanny?

We pay her legally and use a nanny tax service. She started at $19/hour, and we have given her a $1 raise annually for the last two years. When do the $1/year raises stop?

Troll.

Either you live in London or something or you just love overpaying or you're a TROLL dcum nanny.

3-5% raises not $1/hrs raises. Dcum is so so silly.

OP?

OP here. We are not interested in daycare because DC is already in a great mornings-only preschool program. We like the flexibility of having a nanny, especially one who drives and is able to take DC to various playdates and activities in the afternoons.

BTW, the cost of the nanny is not an issue for us. HHI is very comfortable, and we could afford to pay her more if the market demanded. We are aware that her pay is on the higher side, but we are also ethically committed to paying a living wage+ for the DC area. I like the idea of a COL pay increase.

We try very hard to be good bosses, and frankly I am uncomfortable with the PP stating that we are paying too much. PP must either not be familiar with DC or is willfully ignorant of what it costs to live in DC. DC is a really expensive area to live in, and I feel that if you are fortunate enough to be able to hire a nanny that you should be willing to pay a wage that affords your nanny to live humanely in DC. Of course, this doesn't mean that as a nanny you ought to be paid as much per hour as, say, a nurse practitioner with a masters degree, but you shouldn't be paying the nanny the same wage as a fast food checkout clerk.

Omg, you wrote in again pretending to be an employer? Come on.

You're stupid. 5% raise on $20 is.....$1. Idiot.

I know - I just read that and did the math on what we pay our nanny and the typical annual raise we give (which is $1/hour) and a 3-5% raise basically works out to the same amount.

pretty funny.

Poor, poor, little you. Bad, bad nanny didn't cook organic meals for your snowflakes! The world's saddest story played on the world's smallest violin. Maybe she didn't cook organic meals for your kids because you were too cheap to but organic food!

This kind of post really reaffirms my theory that nannies don't deserve to be highly paid.

Sounds like your theory is that your child doesn't need the best possible care.

Good that most parents I know would think otherwise. I certainly do.

You hired poorly the first time. Wages do not determine a great nanny but education and experience do shift the odds in your favor.

All of the typical Hispanic nannies on the cel phones constantly love their charges, too. However their charges are learning very little and are constantly seeking the attention of other adults when out.
