How much flexibility can you reasonably expect from your nanny?

This is like not cancelling a hotel reservation and being charged for the room even though you're not staying in the room. You expect to be able to stay the night in the room a week later, even though someone else has booked it.

I believe that asking to "bank" hours from one week and use them in a different week is illegal. My understanding is that any flex hours have to be used in the same pay period. For example, you could ask your nanny to be flexible and work 8 - 1 on Wednesday when her regular schedule is 8 - 3, and then ask her to stay 2 hours LATE on Thursday, working 8 - 5.

If you need more than 35 hours one week, you would need to pay her regular rate for hours 36 - 40, and her OT rate ($30/hour) for all hours over 40 that week. As a nanny with guaranteed hours, that is what I would assume you meant when asking for flexibility.

Sounds like she hired a professional nanny though an agency. Im not sure if the story is true because it makes no sense. If she does have a nanny and is doing her job and making a difference with her children i think she should be happy. it seems like she is selfish, insecure, and tries to damage nanny's good reputation with children. Oh by the way, you mentioned your a lawyer you shouldn't be cheap to take advantage of her. There just doing there job and doing there best with our children. I hope she will read this site and know her employers true identity.

I guess I'm a little more flexible then most nannies on here. I don't let my nanny family bank hours from different weeks, but if they know they don't need me on a specific day I'm fine with them using the hours on another day in that week. But, I only work 6 hour days usually and I have a max of 8 hours per day in place. I don't work any other jobs so my nanny family is very fortunate that I have so much flexibility.

See the difference is that most of us are working 9 and 10 hour days, with barely enough time at night to eat dinner and relax a little before going to bed and doing it all over again the next day. So yeah, if I'm going to work like a horse for 14 hours straight, I expect to be compensated. I don't think that makes me a bad inflexible nanny.

I've always banked hours. I usually recommend it when interviewing and most families are ok with it once they understand what I'm saying. Basically I get paid a salary every week and if I don't use all those hours I then owe them and my bosses use those hours for date night a few times a month. They usually let me know a few days in advance and it's never been an issue.
