I lived in Georgetown for 5 years and me and all my friends paid $400 a week per family in a nanny share for approx 45hrs - generally cash.
Now I live in Silver Spring and we pay $15 hr for an amazing nanny in a share ($7.50 per family). |
Off the books? |
I'm an adult nanny making ~50K per year and I do just fine living in DC. I work full time as a nanny share getting $21/hr |
we pay 18/hour for 2 toddlers, 50 hours a week.
Our nanny (who is married), makes 43k/year. Her husband makes around 70. They do okay, but its expensive in DC. OTOH, I made under 30k for my first 3 years in DC (I was 30 years old, too) and made 50k until 2008 (and lived solo). It was not easy, but I did okay--inexpensive aprtment, public transit, no kids to raise, etc. |
Why would anyone work for <$20 for a share? I charge $20 for one child in MoCo |
I get $30/hr in Va for one child. |
How many of these $15 an hour for a share nannies are legal? |
We paid $25/hour for our share on Capitol Hill for 50 hours (with true overtime for the last 10). When we had another kid, we got a nanny for just our kids and pay $21.50/hour for about the same quality of nanny. Totally above board and paid through a company. (I'm a fed lawyer, so could/would never consider anything else). From conversations with friends, we seem to pay about $1 over average market in both cases. |
I was new to the nanny share. I asked a family who was seeking a nanny for their nanny share arrangement (how do you rate the pay)? Her response was that if you charge $20 for 1 family we will split the pay. I said "what?! absolutely not!" I was thinking if I charge $20 for 1 family, I would charge $20 for the other ($40) but I knew that was crazy, so I would go down some. I use to charge $15 an hour for a family with 1 child. I did get the job and we agreed on $25 for 2 children ($12.50 per family) which is good but I think nanny shares should pay at least $13 per family or more.
side note: I don't do laundry or cook. I wouldn't mind doing so but they just want me to look after the children and interact with them and not worry about anything else. So for $25 an hour I am good! |
Well what part of Virginia are you in!?! |
You are fortunate! |
