Respect. I've been working for a young family for a short time but was just insulted with a $10.00 gift certificate to Starbucks as a Christmas gift. I honestly did not expect anything from them and would have preferred nothing to the stunningly cheap and impersonal gift you leave for your mailman!

Oh by all means, give it back to them and say as much. You're sooooo right, it is offensive to receive a gift that doesn't measure up to your expectations. Definitely educate them on that point.

My husband is a lawyer and his boss gave him a tiny bag full of crappy candy that looked like it came from a piƱata as his bonus. So guess what, it could be worse.
