Should family provide nanny with car seats that can stay in her car? RSS feed

PP that's great and sounds very sensible but please remember people have different situations. If I have to pick Johnny up from school and drive him to soccer practice, he will need to eat his snack in the car. If Molly and Maisie need to be carted around but are only 4, they're not going to be able to help me clean the mud they've tracked into my car. Etc. Etc. Etc.

My MB used to make me drive her giant labradoodle to and from the dog park every day and never once offered to pay for me to haven car detailed. It was disgusting and I don't look back on her all that fondly, although I adored her kids.

Wait, I'm cheap because I can't afford a third car payment? I'm happy to provide seats but I didn't think we were abnormal for only having two cars.

You're not abnormal or cheap. Ignore the PP.

i bought the carseat in my car. not for this family but another family gave me an unsafe seat. It was involved in an accident so I had it replaced for this family.

$0.56/ mile includes gas, wear and tear, and cleaning / detailing. The other option would be to pay ACTUAL expenses, which would be less, even if you got your car cleaned monthly.

OP: That is a big too much to have to run to their house to get the seats and in case of an emergency at school, etc. the parents don't have a seat in their car. I would insist on seats.

If you are doing a harnessed booster, there are several nice lasting options. The Evenflo Securekid is a great seat. We have several and they are easy to install and use. Get the 300 or 400 series (the difference is the latch). The Harmony Defender at Walmart gets good reviews online but I have not tried it in person. They are $100 each vs. $130-140 for the Evenflo.

At three, they should be in a harnessed booster seat.

There are several cheap harnessed boosters on the market for $100-140 each.

WTF? are you in 1980? The new guidelines now say to keep them RF as long as the seat allows. My 3yo is still RF in a 5pt harness.

Guidelines would tell you to have your child live in a bubble for safety reasons as well if it was possible. When I was 3, I was sometimes riding in a car with no seatbelt. I think a carseat/booster is enough and that there is no real need to keep them rear facing at 3-4 years old. They should just make the backseats of cars face the other way if this is such a safety thing. I am sure it would be more safe for everyone then, not just a 3 yr old.

Flipped my 17 month old around to face forward. She was trying to get unhooked and flip herself around. She's already 3 feet tall. Past rf height on the carseat.

I think they should provide you a set for your car. Getting car seats in with the latches is super hard when you're doing it right. I used to have to install one in my car each day, can't imagine doing two! I usually had to do it when the baby was shaping because it can take a little while. I'd ask them, or get inexpensive ones of your own.

Holy %$(&%$ you are ignorant. I hope to god you don't make any choices yourself regarding the care of a child - yours or someone else's.

You rode in a car without seatbelts? I'm glad you survived, not everyone is so lucky. What you "think" does not compare to the actual research done on child safety. Their results and recommendations (rear facing) are science, your ideas are opinions...and ignorant ones at that.
