Nanny is sick today but technically came in- do I pay her? RSS feed

You should pay her in full with a small tip or gift for coming in while she was sick as a dog. She went above and beyond the call of duty for you; of course you have to pay her. Wow. I'm not usually a huge nanny supporter (or MB for that matter), but this is just unbelievable. Your poor nanny. Wow.

Anyway, I wasn't going to pay her nothing ... I was simply asking if I should decrease her pay for the day since she didn't do anything except lay in the guest bedroom. Not trying to start a war.

She picked your kids up from school and provided an adult presence in your house to make sure your kids didn't burn the house down. It might not be her usual level of job performance, but everyone has off days in which they do less than usual due to illness. What is so darn important in your house that you can't cut her some slack on a day she was vomiting but still managed to make it to your house to do you a favor? Your kids are old enough to look after themselves while their nanny lays low while remaining available.

I really hope she reads this board and recognizes you b/c you don't deserve her. She sure as heck deserves a more understanding employer.

+1000 This. You don't want to pay her the full amount because all she did was lay around? That's because she came in to work with a vomiting illness because you are too irresponsible to figure out your own back-up childcare. After reading your posts I am so grateful for my employers who don't nickel and dime me like you're doing to your nanny. You sound absolutely AWFUL.

I agree, you do sound awful! When I was getting over being sick, and by sick I mean a throat infection that I was already on antibiotics for 4-5 days for, my MB with a 6 and 9 yr old was telling me I could leave early (and still be paid my normal amount) if I wasn't feeling up to it. As I was mostly better, just feeling slightly tired still from fighting the infection, I opted to stay (since I was not infectious and could still help out with the kids). That 1 - you made her come in while very sick, and 2 - that you wanted to pay LESS because she wasn't up to par, that makes you look bad! You are a disgrace to the human race.

OMG!! For realz.

Of course you pay her. Shame on you for making her come into work today when she was so violently ill!! You could have made your kids sick too!! OP, it is YOUR responsibility and yours alone to have a Plan B back-up plan in place in case your nanny falls ill. No one should ever have to come into work when they are vomiting so much.

You should pay her extra in fact since she came in despite probably feeling like shit.
You sound like a horrid employer to me. Selfish and a bad parent for exposing your children to someone so ill.

Go away.

OP, allow me to answer the next few questions you'll be posting: (1) no, you should not reduce your nanny's pay because you caught the stomach virus she gave you when you made her come in to look after kids who are old enough to have hung out with a friend or stayed by themselves for a while - the world is round, and you deserve it; (2) no, you cannot make work her for free to clean the guest bedroom she spent the day in; and (3) no, you should not take it out of her pay if you had to stay home sick and lost one of your precious days off.

I'm an MB, and I assure you, if you are real, you are insufferable.

It's so nice to see MBs and nannies alike united against such foolishness!

Another MB here. Dear god. Of course you pay her - she worked. She worked so that you could work, even though she was seriously ill. (The judgment you showed in wanting her in your house when clearly ill is as poor as the question about needing to pay her.)

She was there, on duty, so she gets paid in full.

You sound like a nightmare employer, especially in light of your other posts. Truly. You give us all a bad name.

How you have managed to retain a nanny who is caring enough to come in as she did I don't know. I hope you are one of the folks paying $25/hr. Your nanny deserves it.

OP is confused. Let me help you out:

You can't be serious! There is no way that anyone could be vapid enough to consider not paying their nanny for taking time out of their extremely horrible day to help you out when it is COMPLETELY within their rights to take a personal day. Seriously though, I would love to know how you think that's fair! I'm just curious too! Would you appreciate treatment like that?

OP you should be so ashamed and I hope karma comes back and bites you in the ass (perhaps in the form of you getting the stomach bug). An 11 year old and a 14 year old can stay be themselves for a few hours. I started staying home by myself at 11 years old. Ridiculous!

OP you are terrible. How often do you see this kind of consensus on DCUM? And on the nanny forum no less! You need to serious reevaluate your world view.
