Nanny is sick today but technically came in- do I pay her? RSS feed

Umm...

YES! Pay her. She worked.

MB here. Is she full-time? If so, she should have some sick days to use, not only for her sake but for your household's. You do not want sick people taking care of your children or bringing a contagious illness into your home. Did she possibly catch it from your children? If so, you should send her home with pay. Part-timers do not usually get sick days so whether you pay her or have her make up the hours would be at your discretion.

What does "she technically came in" mean?
From your post, it sounds like she just came to work.

If she picked up your kids and was in your home watching them in between bathroom visits, you should pay her.

I think most people do but in our case we moved to a new area because DH is in the military and we have no family and very few friends (none of them good friends) so we really don't have any backup and it's REALLY hard. We use an agency so that if our nanny is sick or has an emergency we can get a replacement but once it was too last minute for the agency to find a replacement and I had to take DS to work with me. For this reason as soon as DH is done with his commitment to the military we are moving back near family.

MB here. I would never dream of disrespecting my nanny the way it sounds like you might by not paying her a full day's pay. She honestly deserves a bonus too for dealing with you. How absolutely awful for you to consider not paying. The people on here (both awful MBs and nannies) amaze me. Simple dignity and respect are such afterthoughts. I'm so grateful to my wonderful nanny/honorary family member!!!

Your nanny didn't technically come in. She came in. To not pay her for the time she spent working is wrong on so many levels, but most importantly its illegal. Are you the same poster with the old kids who got in a huff because her nanny was reading a book on the job? If so you really are a piece of work.

Troll.

Are you KIDDING ME? Back up care if YOUR responsibility, not hers. If your nanny is sick (VOMITING, at that) you find someone to watch your kids. How irresponsible and ridiculous of you.

Not a troll- I was really curious. And to the Pp who asked if I was the same poster who got annoyed my nanny was reading a book on the job, I am. Wow. You are a loyal DCUM follower. Anyway, I wasn't going to pay her nothing ... I was simply asking if I should decrease her pay for the day since she didn't do anything except lay in the guest bedroom. Not trying to start a war.

OP, you really have some nerve to even question if she should get paid or not. She helped you out by coming in sick since you had no back up and insisted she come in. If anything, she deserves to get paid extra for putting up with your selfishness. I hope your nanny quits, you are a piece of work.

PP who remembered you. It was the age of your kids that outed you. Not many people have nannies for an 11 and 14 year old. I maintain my assertion. You are a piece of work.

Ugh now I remember OP. Your poor nanny. You sound like a c u next tuesday

I hope this is a troll too because I think it's horrible that OP would even consider not paying her nanny who was helping her out even though she was sick. BUT don't make this about MB couldn't be bothered to take care of her own children. She had a meeting she could absolutely NOT miss. I have a job where I can NOT call in sick at the last minute. If I did that I could lose MY job. Of course if my nanny was sick I wouldn't expect her to come in and if she did anyway I'd be SUPER appreciative and probably pay her extra for it. As I said, if this is true OP is a horrible person but she's horrible for considering not paying the nanny, NOT because she had to go to work.

I think anyone would be facing disciplinary action if they called in last minute, but what are you supposed to do in emergencies?

Just fire your nanny and put her out of her misery.
