Why is it so hard to find a PT afternoon nanny? RSS feed

My 5yo starts kindergarten next month. Looking for PT afternoon help and willing to pay $15-25/hr. I would think this is a dream job for a student. Having a lot of trouble finding someone.

Really? I find that hard to believe also. Is there anything in your post that might make the job unappealing?

Hello Mrs!
I don't know why you couldn't find a afternoon sitter, but i am interested about the position. Can you please provide a contact number to reach you. I am student and i have a lot of experiences from newborn to school age and very good references and long term commitments.
Thank you and have a great weekend!

Are you posting on the college job boards? Depending on where you're located I know that AU and Georgetown I think have one. We've gotten all of our afterschool sitters from the AU jobs board

I think this is why a lot of families opt for au pairs. Not as easy as you might think to find this kind of help.

Hi have you found someone? I am interested.

I think it's hard to find a college student who is free 5 afternoons a week, reliably, and doesn't want or need that time to do something else.

I am also trying to find a PT babysitter after school. It has been very difficult. Our last babysitter worked for us for 3 1/2 years, and she was wonderful - she moved out of the country back home to take care of a sick parent. I'm posting the ad in all the right places (including on DCUM, Care.com, and Craigslist) and not getting responses. Should I post flyers in our local supermarket? Any advice? If I could get some advice on what PT nannies and babysitters want, I will definitely try and be open with those requirements...

you may need to consider offering the job to 2-3 people...one who's available MW, another TTh, another F etc. Normal nannies need more hours, college/hs students have changing class schedules, different schedules on different days, other activities etc. Offer to throw in dinner or metro pass etc as an enticement.

It may be harder to find someone with a car and willing to do school pick up. I did pickup/drop off for my last position and it was a real nightmare.
