Should I Be Paid? RSS feed

I just started a night nanny position for a great family 2 weeks ago. I just signed on with their payroll company, and they said I will begin being paid starting the week of September 1st, guaranteed hours. The past 2 weeks during my trial I was being paid cash at the end of the week. I just found out they are going on vacation next week and won't be needing me. I am a student and just quit my other job for this one. I am nervous they will not pay me for next week. Do you think they should?

If you don't work you don't deserve money. Welcome to the real world.

You know well in advance, go look for some babysitting gigs.

If they are decent and wish to continue to use you as their many they should definitely pay you for the vacation week! And you said it's guaranteed hours so it shouldn't be a question, but you could ask them just to be sure they plan to pay.

Do you not have a contract?

I do have a contract with the guaranteed hours. But that only starts the first week in September.

Then I would assume you are not going to be paid since you have not technically started the job yet.

Well I think the issue is OP does not officially start until September 1st. The only reason she did the trial period now was because they are going away. If you signed the contract knowing you started September 1, I don't understand the issue of not being paid for the week before you officially start. I mean, your start date is sept 1, which you knew. So I would assume you would have budgeted your money around this?

I had no idea they were going away until yesterday. Only signed everything today. Had no idea the jobs official date would be in September. Never would have did the trial if I knew I would not be paid.

You did a 2 week trial without knowing when your start date would be?

If it was a trial, there was no guarantee you were going to get the job at all. I wouldn't worry about it. You obviously did well and they offered you the job, but it hasn't started yet. No reason you would be paid in the interim. It's not at all uncommon for families to do trial periods while parents are still on leave, sometimes well before the job starts. Next time, just be sure you know when the job starts before you begin the trial, so that you can weigh that against whatever other options you may have.

It's odd that you only just now found out the start date despite a very lengthy trial time. But I would assume they set the start date for 9/1 since they knew they would be on vacation next week so did not want to pay right at the outset for an entire week they were not going to use.

You won't be paid. It is unfortunate that they didn't tell you about the vacation, sounds like they gave you a long trial as a way of getting childcare without having to pay for the week they were away.

Doesn't sound like great people to work for.

This. Hour employees are not paid if they do not work.

Well, then, no, you shouldn't be paid. It's odd you agreed to a long trial and didn't understand your start date. No one can advocate for you but you. If you are ignorant of the terms of your employment, you pay the price.
