I was wondering if those of you with more experience could give me some kind of idea of what the ballpark cost is to participate in a nanny share (we would have a baby about 7 months old, ideally hosted at another family's house). Probably ideally in Silver Spring/Takoma/Hyattsville/NE DC area.
I've seen many great adverts on the MD Nanny Share forum but not a lot of talk about money. We are on several daycare wait lists and would like to look into in-home daycare as well as nanny shares when we get closer to needing care (about a year from now) but I don't want to waste other people's time if nanny shares (in particular) are out of our budget. I realize this is probably highly variable but even a ballpark figure/range would be so helpful. Many thanks! |

Nanny share in Silver Spring - $18 per hour (so $9 per family), and we pay time and a half for over 40 hours.

For us it is $20 per hour |
| 800 a week for 50 hours in a share in northern part of silver spring. |
| Taking into account taxes and payroll fees, as well as a health care stipend, it ran us about 25K a year (NW DC). |
+1. However, the daycare centers we looked at were both around $2K a month, so it wasn't actually all that different in the end (though that would have covered more hours--though we wouldn't have used them all anyway). We're hunting for home daycares for #2 just because the nannyshare/center cost plus preschool is prohibitive for us. They tend to be less, but not as much less as I'd been hoping. Yay for high cost of living areas... |

We did a nanny share about five years ago. Paid $20 per hour. 4 kids (two were mine, two were other mother's). I paid half, she paid half. Nanny was a college student, it was a part-time (25-30 hours per week) deal. It was mostly picking up the kids from their various preschools (2), making dinner, playing some games, that sort of thing. Mild, simple.
I'll admit, we paid under the table. |
