We have been looking for an afterschool sitter/nanny for our two preschool-aged kids for the past month (15 hours a week, M-F). I have posted ads here, AU jobs board, Care.com and Sittercity. We really just need someone to pick them up from school and hang out with them til we get home; I don't expect much in the way of anything extra, except for maybe cleaning up any mess the kids make on her watch. We will let the person use our car, but they need a valid driver's license and clean record, but they only need to drive a few blocks away for pick up if the weather is bad. Also, we're not hugely accessible by public transportation, so we need someone who can get to us in a timely way (we're in Chevy Chase, DC). We expect to pay reasonable market rates (15-18/hr)
I've reached out to HUNDREDS of people on all the sites asking if they're interested, but either they don't respond or they say we don't have enough hours for them. I don't get what people do to find someone with this kind of schedule?? Our local elementary doesn't have enough room in the afterscare program for our 4 year old, so we really need the help! Any suggestions? |
You have to offer more hours or up the rate to make up for it. |
No one wants a Monday-Friday job with so little hours. Why keep their availability open if they could work 15 hours in 2 days instead on 5? |
Find a local high school kid or two or three. Maybe one can take m, w, and another t, th and another f. This way you have back up kids who can help when student A has softball in the spring or whatever. Theaverage adult won't be interested in this long term unless it's a stay at home mom in your neighborhood looking to make a few bucks or something. |
I'm surprised you haven't found someone on the AU job board. Your best best is to find 2 college kids with class schedules to accomodate this. A lot of kids are off for the summer so you may need to wait until August when they know their class schedules.

You need to up the hours and offer more pay.
15-18 may be acceptable for full time work (though even then that's lower than many pay for two kids), but if you want part-time you have to pay more. We pay our part-time nanny 25/hour and guarantee 35 hours/week. When kids are at school she does kids laundry, prepares meals and buys groceries. |
I thought there was a nanny surplus?
That's what so many of you MB's say. Here is proof that a good nanny is hard to come by. |
OP doesn't like the answers she is getting here.

You expect everything but want it for nothing.
That's like going into a car dealership and saying "I want to buy this brand new Mercedes for the price I would pay for a Toyota Camry and I want 0% financing." |
Hi!
I am inter ![]() |
That's a different poster. |
I started out working part time in an after school position. Perhaps instead of posting to the AU job boards you can contact the head of the early childhood education dept at the university and see if he or she would be willing to send out an email about the position. I don't go to AU, but the heads of the depts at my college are always happy to send out an email if it helps a student gain experience in their field.
You also have to expect to pay a higher rate than if you were listing a full time job. Anymore, students aren't just working to have extra fun money. On top of tuition I have rent and other bills to pay, so my after school care job goes towards that. Perhaps you can offer someone extra hours before the kids come home to do some cleaning, laundry or errands. I would have loved to be able to make some extra cash in college this way! |
Hello,
Im student and i would be pleased to have an extra cash. Can you leave your contact please? I would probably accept it but with a little higher pay . Thank you |
don't waste your time. she'll find someone willing to accept it for the range she's offering. |
Hello,
