I just started with a new family and Mb's birthday is coming up... Would it be okay to get her just a card from myself and do something small with the kiddos?

What do you do for mb and DB on their birthdays?

Something small as in cupcakes or a craft?

I had only been with this employer for a few months and just picked up grocery store flowers and brought them to her from me (and the baby).

Mb here. Don't feel any obligation to do anything that costs money on my behalf. Please no kiddie crafts.

I usually do a homemade, 2-dimensional craft, so if they are the anti-clutter type, they can just snap a photo and trash it.

Can't you just tell by being in their house if they're anti-clutter people, and then just not bother with the craft at all? Why waste the supplies?

I never give MB or DB birthday cards or gifts. Sometimes at Christmas I will take the kids to make something for them but not always. It just depends on the family .

How is it a waste of supplies if it's a craft the kids enjoy making?

Maybe you're right. I just really hate clutter, kid-art and don't encourage my kids at all to do crafts. I know other people could be into that sort of thing.

Keep in mind that kid-art is more for the artist than it is for you. And anybody who thought it's a waste of supplies probably wouldn't have those supplies to begin with, right?

You sound like a great mom. Really putting your kids development first and foremost. Jeez!!!

I usually do a card for MB & DB's birthday from me. Their spouse has always handled getting a card and presents for the Bday person from the kids.

Or maybe the children benefit from the sensory and fine motor aspects of art, as well as the social aspect of expressing appreciation and affection to their family members? No, you're right. Your bizarre need to avoid any and all clutter from your children definitely trumps their need to express themselves through creative media.

MB here - echoing another, please don't feel you need to spend your money on me. It feels awkward and unnecessary to me. Help the kids bake a cake or make a card - sure, that is more than enough. I don't need or want you to buy me anything.

My nanny has never gotten me anything and I've never mentioned my birthday date so I certainly wouldn't expect anything. A gift would feel a little awkward but I would love love love a kiddy craft or handmade card for that or other holidays like mother's day or valentines day. Nice of you to think about it.
