Tax Lien RSS feed

Hi guys,

Long story short, my old employer's accountant did my payroll completely wrong and I ended up owing taxes back to the state even though it should have been taken out of my paycheck. I am still battling paying the total amount which has been well over 1k. The problem is that the tax lien shows on my credit report. Will this also show on a background check? How do I properly explain the trouble to a potential new employer?

Tell the truth. Simple.

Just explain that your previous employer's payroll service incorrectly handled your taxes which is why there is a tax lein on your credit report

I am not too sure that it will show on a background check. It will show on a credit report, I see no need for a family to need to check that.

If it does, explain what happened.

I am confused though, why are you paying back the taxes owed? Was it not under your assumption that it was being removed from your paychecks? If it was, what happened to that money if it wasn't applied to your taxes?

Your employer screwed you. I'd make her pay up.
