I wonder why it's so hard to just get a reasonably "in the board" position. Everytime I get a response for a parent ( which is not often ) they want to underpay me or pay me under the table. What am I doing wrong

are you legal to work? Are you asking for too much money?
I am legal and I don't even tell people a set price I'm always willing to negotiate.
No snark intended, but going only off of your post, I would say your presentation likely needs polishing. If you are charging competent professional nanny wages, employers need to see that in your presentation, ie. proper grammar, punctuation, and proper use of terms. Its "above board" or "over the table" FYI, or simply say that you would like to be paid legally. Good luck!
Thanks I actually noticed I typed the wrong term. I also noticed my grammar is not that great when if comes to applications, so I appreciate the advice. Will work on it!
The fact that you don't give the parents a figure allows them to offer a low pay. I don't know how they are finding you, but if you don't even have a minimum of what you are asking or if you are setting your minimum too low, then that is what you are going to get offered.
