Nannies/MBs - what's your weather policy? RSS feed

Title says it all. Should a nanny work when schools are off? If she doesn't, should it be paid? Do you have anything in weather in your contracts?

My contract says we follow the federal government, and its "administrative" leave for me, so doesn't count against my vacation. I live out in the suburbs, so often the snow is worse near me, and not so bad near my bosses, so they are understanding.

I have been a live-in in the past, so I never got snow days.
But this is one of those things that need to be brought up at the beginning. I think I would follow either school systems or the government when determining if your nanny has to come in.
Yes, we all would like to think your nanny could come in, but this is where compassion and openness need to come in.

We follow the federal government in terms of whether or not nanny should come in. This is modified by a general reasonableness standard if she is concerned but the gov is open.

As for pay, nanny can use her PTO, stay over at our house as needed, or make up the hours. I don't offer the day off without counting it against her PTO because my own job requires me to work from home on snow days. When I can't do that because the nanny does not come in, I have to use my own PTO and/or make up the work on the weekend, which requires me to pay for childcare at that time.

Re PTO, in lieu of sick days, we provide five days of unspecified PTO on top of her two weeks of vacation. She can use this leave for personal or family illness, personal business, or additional vacation days. I generally don't provide additional paid days based on the nanny having a good reason or not being at fault (snow, funerals, family emergencies, etc.), but I have always been willing to let nanny make up hours or take unpaid time when legitimate needs exceed available PTO. This is basically the way my job works.

8:07 again. To clarify, it is the third week of unspecified PTO that the nanny can dip into to cover snow days. She can also use these days in half day increments.

What about live in nannies who work when it snows. Do you make the live in nanny drive the children to play dates or other events if they are not comfortable?

I've slipped on ice at clients homes. I now tell parents, that i'll come in, if my streets are clear, metro is running, AND if they clear their walkway/steps. I prefer to stay at home and not get paid, and keep all of my limbs intact, than injure myself, and have a parent quickly replace me...with feigned concern, and hope that I understand.

Listen to yourself, woman. You can't be that ignorant, can you?

What do you mean ? What am I supposed to do when the kids have a play date scheduled or want to go bowling ? I'm having this issue today right now.

I'm having this issue right now. My nanny is not comfortable driving at all if it's snowing or potentially icy. While I understand to a certain extent, I am not willing to pay her to be absent on every wet day that might go below freeing this winter.

And by "not driving," I mean not being able to get from her house to mine.

If you aren't comfortable driving, you skip it. Pretty simple stuff. It's really a debate for you whether you should risk a car accident so the kids can go bowling? Play outside in the snow if the kids are that restless.
When did common sense become so difficult?

The issue is my bosses are the ones who set up the play date expecting me to take the children. By me not taking them I am going against my bosses orders. I'd rather not lose my job but I'm very scared to drive in this weather.
