How legitemate are the "Recommending My Nanny" posts? RSS feed

Just wondering if the posts on the Nanny Position index where empoyers are recommending their current nanny because they're moving are legitemate. I'm trying to find a nanny and just want to make sure...

You just want to make sure? Sorry, there are no short cuts. It takes a ton of time, and even more effort. Not to mention the fact that your neighbor's dream nanny, could easily be your nanny from hell.

No one knows what kind of mother (or employer) you are, anymore than you know of your neighbor. How do you "sell" yourself to a potential nanny? Are you upfront and honest about your own shortcomings, both as a parent and as an employer?

The only way to find out for sure is to contact them and ask questions. Also, the fact that a nanny is being recommended doesn't necessarily mean she'll be a good fit for your family. You still need to ask lots of questions and know what works for you.

I'm not trying to take short cuts. Just wondering if its even worth following those leads. Surely you must remember what its like to have a newborn. I barely have time to pee...and all the research and up front work I did when I was pregnant was useless because all the nannies i contacted told me that I was looking too early.

20:16 here.
First of all, let me congratulate you on the birth of your child. Personally, I adore working with babies and toddlers, and even preschoolers for that matter. Would you like to describe the type of person you are hoping to find? Also, I don't like to mention it, but naturally the better the compensation package you are able to offer, the better the candidates you will likely attract.

Try nanny Poppinz...I am a career nanny and I think they do a great job

I recommended our former nanny here. She is not very good in responding right away to the inquiries and ended up not getting a job through here. She is employed now (found a job on sittercity) and for all I know that family is happy with her.
If I were to search for a nanny, I would look at those "recommending our nanny" posts firt. Keep in mind though, that yours and recommender's priorities and needs maybe vastly different. I have a friend who has not even interview a nanny as she came highly recommended by other families. It turned out that the nanny had a very different paranting philosophy than my friend and the employment did not work out.

You didn't say why....

Not legit in my experience. We interviewed several terrible candidates from posts like that. We ended up posting our own ad and found much better candidates that way and eventually our current nanny.

Mixed bag.

Some are obviously written by a nanny.

Some were written by a parent for another nanny but may have been stolen and edited. My friend had her rec stolen, we only found out because we saw it being used here a few months later word for word and it was pretty specific/not a case where somebody could have just done it verbatim.

I wouldn't value them any more highly than a post a nanny writes for herself but backs up by sending references.

I agree it's mixed bag. I posted on behalf of our nanny, because we really did move and she needs new work. I can't keep picking her up at the bus stop after packing two kids into car seats. However, I think she's better with babies than older kids. So like PPs said, you have to evaluate each one based on your particular needs.

I wouldn't go very far talking only to the employer. If you contact the nanny and she seems legit, why not?
