Need advice about taking a week off.... RSS feed

I just found out I need to have a surgery in December. I am scared to let my bosses know. I have been working for them for about 3 months. The nanny before me was late, took a lot of days off which caused the parents to be written up at work! From the sounds of it they don't have anymore vacation days left and are on strike 3. They also don't have backup....I don't know how to let them know I need a week off right before Christmas! I love my job and the family and don't want this to change anything! Also I don't really want to share with them what I'm having surgery on and I don't want to lie about it...what's a good way to get around not telling them my personal problem. It's nothing major but kind of embarrassing to share with them. If worse to worse I could offer to have them bring them to my house and have my mom help out but, I don't know if I want to be recovering with 3 kids running around! Any advice would be great! Thanks!

Just talk to them and be open. It will give them enough time for a back up plan.

Can you help them find a replacement nanny? If you tell them early, they may replace you. If you don't tell them early, they get stuck and fired from their jobs then you are gone anyway.

You will have given them plenty of notice to find coverage for while you're gone. Don't make their problems yours.

Do you have any kind of "agreement" with them?

Thanks for the great advice so far! I know I shouldn't be so worried about it but I feel guilty for some reason. We do not even have a contract. I just know what they expect and they know what I expect.

Do you think they might just get another nanny if you told them now?

I agree that this is THEIR problem, not yours! You will be able to give them more than enough notice to figure something out and they couldn't possibly expect you to not have a necessary surgery because they don't have a back up plan. What happens if you wake up with the flu one day in the meantime? I would bring it up, you don't need to go into the specifics and they shouldn't ask for any. Just basically tell them what you told us, explain that you know it's an inconvenience and you would like to work with them to figure something out. Maybe you all can find a back up plan for not only this, but any time you would need it.

I think OP is concerned that they might get another nanny as soon as they can find one.

Can your mom be your replacement nanny at their house for the week you're home? Or, do you have a friend who could do it?

There will be a lot of families going on vacations in December and so lots of nannies looking for a smidge of work here and there. Offer to help the family find a substitute nanny for the week, apologize, and continue being dependable.

Your health comes first, before a job.

I had lipo on a Friday and went back to work on Monday. I was in pain, but I sucked it up.

You didn't suck up anything, fatty. The doctors did that for you.

Well OP, since you already know and you have a few months to plan ahead, I say talk to your bosses ASAP and tell them. Since you guys have plenty of time, either help them search for a replacement/back-up nanny to step in or why not have your mother take your place while you recover?
