Fair deal? RSS feed

Just want to make sure this is a fair deal...
Thinking of taking a job looking after 2 girls ages 10&12. At first she said only needed 3 days then she was like you know what you sound great do you want to do this full time? So it's 6-8 in mornings and 3-8 in evenings for 12 an hour. They go out on date night once a week after 8 I get paid 10 an hour. They go away once a month if they can and they paid their last sitter 600 bucks from Thursday- Sunday night. It comes to about 300 dollars a week just for 3-8 everyday. Don't want them to do the math and say its too much. What do you think?

No, it's NOT a fair deal for you.

Yikes. Not a fair deal at all.

How old are you? Unless you are 16, this is an awful job. I made more money than this when I was in high school. I hope this isn't a serious post.

OP-this isn't the worst job ever. Contrary to what most of the posters here would have you believe, $12 for a relatively easy position (at 10 and 12 they are pretty independent, you are more of a chauffeur/extra pair of eyes or hands) is not that horrible of a wage. Most of the "nannies" here are going to tell you a position is crap unless it pays $20/hr with full benefits. I would negotiate on the "after 8" rate, as that is the only suspicious part, but the rest is not outrageous. If you want a position with relatively decent hours (you can take another job in the 8-3 time slot) and not a ton of work, this is not bad at all. FWIW, I took a job that paid not too much more than that for toddler twins and DID NOT feel as though I was suffering some horrible injustice by being underpaid.

In the DC area this would be very unacceptable.

I'm assuming you're not from here if you're considering this- so what is the market rate in your area for someone with your experience? Do YOU feel it's fair? Does it offer you the chance to learn new skills for your resume?

My first nanny job paid $10 an hour. Many of us started low for the first job or two. I now make $23-28/hour. I'm grateful to that $10/hr job for giving me a chance and helping me get where I am. I'm still in touch with them, too.

Why is it less after 8pm?

+1 I agree.

OP - I know MANY nannies and none of them are paid over $15/hour. Only on DCUM you will see anonymous users inflating rates, trying to tell you that you should be getting $20/hour. It's false. If it was that easy than i'm sure many would quit their jobs and go into nannying. Only a small percentage of nannies (usually with ECE background, CPR/First Aid, college educated, experience, refs, etc) make $20/hr.

To answer your question, yes, it seems like a fair rate.

Regardles of the OP's query, your statement is the false one. Experienced quality nannies make between $17 and $20 an hour in this area- I know because I've been a nanny here for over 15 years. Please don't spout misinformation on a subjection upon which you are so uninformed.

Some nannies make $17+ in this area, but many nannies also make $15/hr for one child. There is no need to accuse anyone of spouting misinformation, 15:00, as you are only in the position to report your own rate, not the market average, especially since you don't know the market average.
