SSN is unverified? RSS feed

Anonymous
Hi - first time employer here and we want to do everything on the up and up (taxes, etc). We found a nanny we like but her SSN comes back 'unverified' on care.com. Subsequently, she went to the SSA and they fixed some green card/permanent residency/married name change issue and said it would be updated in 48 hours. This was last Friday. So we did another check today (Tuesday) after 5pm and it still came back unverified. Her previous employer said everything was fine (and paid taxes). The nanny even sent me a copy of her SS card and letter from last Friday.

Anyone have this issue? We wanted to run a higher level background check but wonder what's the point if this doesn't even come back OK. We spoke to her current and previous employer and they only had good things to say. Thoughts? Advice? Tia

Seems that you should be able to do the criminal check, or move on to the next one.

The local criminal check came back fine already, so I should just go ahead with the federal check? It's $80. Thx

Go with another candidate, i wouldn't spend 80 dollars for all you know the name and ssn number is fake and will come up clean. Is she the inky person who applied for your job?

No, but we really liked her a lot. She even sent a pic of her SS card and would send her DL too if I asked. We can leep searching, just happy to have found someone we liked. Thanks for your input.

How far away from you is she?

I wouldn't trust care.com to be accurate.

Care.com has been on national news because they've earned a reputation for giving their sitters a clean background check even when there are criminal histories. I know that NBC for one, has done investigative reporting to expose this issue that has many parents -and nannies- concerned.

I wouldn't consider any background/SS# checks from an unofficial site (like care.com) to be valid regardless of the result. Pay for the federal check.

I had the same issue with care where I was unveried. I went through 3 agencies and they all came back clean. My current family did a check and that was clean as well. If you like this nanny then by all means do your own check. Hope it all works it.

Thx all for your input. Do you know where I should do an external check through? Any places you recommend?

I would run a better background check than through Care.com. Seriously OP? Those checks are so flimsy....They are not even legit in my book.

I believe this nanny is not hiding anything, because if she was she wouldn't be so forthcoming with her information. Care.com is just screwing everything up because they suck.

If the references say she is good, then why not do your own independent background check on this woman? Sure you will have to pay more out of pocket, but it would be so worth it considering your child is involved.
