I was searching care.com for an occasional position and this add was put up! How crazy is this?!

Starting on Sep 8, 2013 (Sunday)
Taking care of a newborn.
Light house keeping.
Hours from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

No, $5./hr is less than the US Federal Minimum Wage.
Care.com is so far being allowed to operate illegally.

Care.com only allows users to state rates in $5 increments. As long as they are paying minimum wage and OT for hours worked over 40, it is legal.

Whether it's an attractive job or not is an entirely separate issue.

Five dollars an hour has nothing to do with being "attractive". It's illegal. Period.
We all know that they can choose their "settings" any way they want. Stop trying to defend fraud because it only makes you look like a crook to.

I haven't been on Care.com in a year and cannot believe they are still using this $5/Hr. option. What a joke!! This is illegal and shouldn't even be an option for the parents!! I always resented this.

I wish someone would call them out on this and shut down this whole website.

I see those stupid commercials where the woman who started this website talks about how great it is and blah, blah blah, etc.

She should also talk about how it encourages parents to pay illegal babysitting rates as well!!!!!!!

If they're looking to pay $7.25 - 10/hr it's legal. Care does not give an option for $7.25 - 10. This has nothing to do with trying to defend fraud, just pointing out the law. Unless the family is paying less than minimum wage (which we don't know if they are), they're doing nothing illegal.

Of course it does, it is a company with the aim to connect people, but at the end of the day it's main objective is to make money, there is nothing wrong with that. Care and sites like it have the burden of needing to please their consumers (the parents) and some parents choose to pay under $10/ hr. It is not the sites responsibility to set market rates or ensure legality. Caregivers use the website for free, the company is not responsible for pleasing them, rather they are looking out for their paying customers. If you don't like the job, don't respond. If you don't like the company's policy, don't benefit from their services. It's a free market.

A free market doesn't relieve businesses of their moral obligations; Care shouldn't offer any option paying below federal minimum wage and should actually represent the state minimum wage where applicable.

Thanks, 16:39. Actually, "it's a free market" only within the limitations of the law. That means that a job offer for $5.00 an hour is ILLEGAL. But of course there'll always be a starving immigrant who'll take the job. That's what you want?

The site sets up pay ranges in $5 increments. This post does not specifically indicate what in the range the pay is. Noting illegal has occurred. Care.com has not facilitated anything illegal either.

Stop defending crime. Offering a job at an hourly wage in a range that starts at five dollars per hour is criminal, according to our laws.
