I'm moving across the country and trying to market myself as best I can. I have a professional website custom made for me and I have created an ebook portfolio that can be viewed on iPads/tablets or on your computer, along with the standard resume, business cards and use of online nanny websites. I want to set myself apart since I'm hoping to find a position before officially moving to my new state and was wondering if having a photographer take professional photos (much like the ones you see on linked in) will give a more personal touch that will make me memorable to potential employers. Parent's, do you think this will set me apart or hinder my chances. |
As long as the pictures you already have are professional looking, I don't think it is a big deal. However proof reading and proper use of apostrophes are. |
I'm an MB. Professional photos would be irrelevant to me, and the website and ebook portfolio would be interesting but not determinative in my hiring you. A far bigger issue would be your availability to interview in person. I'm not sure I would hire anyone who didn't spend time with me and my family first.
So the things you're describing would set you apart, but I'm not sure in a way that would make me pursue you. However, it might be that a very high profile family might see this differently. I'm a garden variety WOH mother of twin toddlers. I pay decently, offer great benefits, etc... but it isn't a $25/hr job. I hired from recommendations from my neighbors - which carried tremendous weight. All the best to you in your search, but don't spend a lot of your money on things that can't replace in person (or really good, repeated) face to face contact and references. Put that money towards a plane ticket to come do interviews in person. Flying out to be available for interviews WOULD set you apart in a very important, impressive way in my eyes. |
Thanks for the responses. I would be planning on flying out at least four times before my actual move to interview and apartment hunt. I'm just hoping to find a few families interested before I purchase my plane ticket. I'm also sending all my information to nanny agencies.
In Boston my website and portfolio did set me apart from other candidates. I was told multiple times it was one of the major reasons for being hired, along with my excellent references. I guess I'm hoping that it will help me when I move. |
Typing on my cell so my grammar and spelling isn't great lol When communicating with potential employers everything is proof read by friends |
