| I make a little over $100k per year. Just had my first little girl on 8/9. I am dreading going back to work. DH is staying home as he has a night job a couple nights a week. Is it possible to start a day care and make over $100k per year if me and DH watch like 5 or 6 kids? How many can one person legally watch? |

| Its possible. Anything is possible but most don't get rich off day care. You'd basically have to charge $1600-2000 per child a month and very few are going to pay that for a home day care with your child in it and two care providers. |

| No way. Daycare just doesn't cost that much per child. In home daycares are cheaper and if you were to buy a building, hire staff etc. you'd be spending money to start out. |

| $60,000 for 5 kids would be the most you could ask for reasonably, and 4-5 is what you would probably start out with. Then there would be things that YOU pay for, things that are part of the monthly fee. You wouldn't have the parents bringing their kids food, you would do that, etc. So the final total would be much less. Stick to your actual job. Running a daycare (getting it started and secure financially) is hard work. |

| Op again. So I couldn't charge $500 a week if I incorporated Spanish or another language into the equation? What about piano? What if my daycare was the coolest daycare in DC? I would hire a third person to teach Spanish everyday. 9 kids total @ $500 a week for 48 weeks is $216k. Insurance might take a big chunk and hiring a Spanish instructor. |

OP, as a point of reference, most home daycares charge $250 to $300-ish in my suburb area - it's not super far out but neither is it inside the beltway.
the rate you want to charge would be a relatively high amount for a nannyshare even (since $1000 a week is a pretty great salary - even for a share) so why in the world would someone pick a daycare with a huge slew of kids in it over a 2 to 1 ratio? I might pay up to $400 a week for a great homedaycare with an educated / middle-class provider who limits herself to 3 kids. Otherwise, i fail to see how you're a more attractive option than a nanny share. |

Where are you getting 48 weeks from? If you run a daycare, you need to be open most days of the year, federal holidays excluded. You would need to hire another helper as well (depending on the laws you may be required to) or do you really think you could handle 9 children of varying ages on your own. You would need to make some amendments to your home as well, I know there are regulations on bathrooms, kitchen facilities and marking exits, etc. On top of that, few parents would be willing to pay $500 a week for in home daycare, regardless of how cool it is. You have no ECE training or background and come from sales...what makes you qualified exactly? You seem to be pretty naive about the whole process and are coming at it from an angle of making an easy, quick buck. It will be anything but that. |
