Over the weekend DB decided to take the kids on a camping/RV trip. A week long camping trip. Meaning that I am not working this week. I have no PTO, so I am not getting paid for this week. They plan to be gone till the 18th.

I feel kinda crappy. I have saved up cash to use at times like this (I don't have guaranteed hours) but its running low. Should I mention it?

Are you legal? I cannot imagine someone who is legal taking a job without any benefits. Find another job and leave them in the lurch.
Anonymous
Yes I am legal. Also not in the DC area (if it matters).

I am not a full time employee, but still the income is important.

If you are at a breaking point it is worth telling your employers you realize that this was the deal but trying to deal with exactly how much time this is turning out to be (if this is not the first time). Then if they do not agree to reconsider try to find another job.

Currently, (thankfully!) another family needed some emergency care for a few days this week so I have made some money in the lag time.

They want me to come back on to work for the next school year, but this "unplanned" leave has occurred before.

Maybe you should do a better job negotiating a contract with the benefits that are important to you.

Grow up.

I am a pt employee. What exactly did I do wrong?

NP. Take a position that guarantees pay.
Anonymous
Yes, even PT employees can get guaranteed pay. I make sure of this with all my positions.

Use this week off to find a new position.

I don't get why you people come here if you have nothing useful or nice to say. Your opinion doesn't matter.

OP, I personally think it's not your place to bring it up now but if you do renew the contract for next year add the benefit and see if they will agree. If they're use to not paying you they might not be up for it so be prepared to look elsewhere.

I agree with a prior poster who suggested sitting down and chatting with the family. They may not realize the position the unpaid leave puts you in and if you have a respectful conversation about it 1) you know that they know, 2) they have the opportunity to offer you something going forward and 3) you will know where you stand. I would do this, assuming you are otherwise happy with the position, before you just go look for another position. If you cannot come to a meeting of the minds, then by all means look for something else.

Guaranteed pay is a negotiated benefit, not a right. I have worked with many thousands of employers over more than 20 years and most are perfectly reasonable and in fact will compromise to retain a valued employee. What they are not is mind readers. Unless you have talked about this before, if you were my employee I would appreciate the opportunity to have the discussion and see if we can come to an agreement we can all live with.

How many hours a week do you work? The fewer it is, the less likely you are to be successful with guaranteed hours.

Maybe you could negotiate with them that you need at least 2 weeks notice of vacations or they pay; that would give you time to set up other work.

This is what I (another PT nanny) do. If they give me notice then I can plan to fill that time with either other temp work or with a trip/plans of my own. If they do not give sufficient notice, then I need to be paid, but I am willing to come to the house during my usual hours and cook meals to freeze, catch up on laundry, organize the playroom, rotate kids' clothes, or go to the grocery store/do basic housekeeping so that they come home to a tidy house and full fridge.
