S/O finding a cheap nanny RSS feed

I actually came across a nanny on sittercity who was asking for $5-10/hr.
My initial feeling was to question if something was wrong with her, is there a reason her rate is so low? Maybe she's just desperate for work, but maybe it's a red flag? I don't know, but she has a background check on file and is legal to work. What would you think?

I have seen sitter rates on Care and Sittercity within that range. Maybe they are desperate for a job, have a spouse who works o don't charge as much, don't really need to work but want to, etc. several possibilities.

Of course it's a red flag. You already know, if it sounds to good to be true, it usually is. You don't be that dumb about your kid's safety.

Why do you think it's a red flag? Can you expand? She's legal and her BG checks out.

Do you cut your rates by over half for a total stranger?

NP but I would question why anyone charges so far below market for any product or service. Would you jump at the chance to buy a car for $500 or would you first question extensively the reason for the below market price? Have you seen proof of her legality? Its easy to pass a background check under someone else's name and SSN. Its also quite easy to pass the half ass background checks on those online sites.

I don't think it's below "market rate" MR is what people will pay. Nannies are mad that someone would charge so little because it drives wages down, but that's what a market is/does. Some nannies also foresee an impending change in wages due to the downward economy and want to ensure they keep a job. Most nannies are not educated on the economic climate (most people are not in general), so it'll blindside them when their employers start dropping wages. They'll complain and complain and refuse to accept the truth and then just be broke and unemployed. All of the 5 buck nannies will be smiling in the corner thankful that they may not be getting high wages, but they have a job (win-win).

Indeed, and we will all be subsidizing their food stamps and welfare checks so you can gloat about your cheap nanny, and the fact the she's "not allowed" to eat your food.

How is it that you sleep with yourself every night, you entitled slob?

$5 an hour is below min wage. That would be a reg flag for me. $10 would spell really needs a job, or maybe even $8. I had a candidate ask for $10 which I felt was too low and told her it would be $14 because I expected more out of her than a babysitter. I hired her for $14 and she was great. She was temporary and a college student and just didn't know market rates. I think I should have paid the $10, but she was worth the $14. I hired someone else on a temp basis and paid $12. Also great.

Wow, what an inappropriate and bitchy response, PP. The poster you quoted didn't say anything about eating food. Take your bad attitude elsewhere.

Could be the sites allow you to select salary in $5 increments. So if she wants 7/ hr maybe she has to select 5-10.

Pay rates differ significantly in different areas.

$5./hour IS below your "market rate" and everyone knows it, lol. Anyone who suggests otherwise is a first class slob.

I agree with others that $5-$10 is probably an option. The nanny candidate probably is looking for something between minimum wage and $10 an hour. I wouldn't discount her as she could be coming from daycare experience which is a harder job and often pays in the range. She may also have other things that make her a less desirable candidate for some jobs but perfectly fine for yours such as not driving or limited hours. This is an international community so a nanny that is not fluent in english may need to charge a much lower rate because most people can't hire her but she may be able to find an employer who also speaks her language. Finally, rates and wages are VERY inflated on this board. Even the $15 hour standard, which IMO is fine for a nanny, is not really the standard and higher end.

I was thinking that but at the same time most nannies and babysitters are asking for the higher end on these websites.
If the reason is because she's not fluent in Spanish, that doesn't both me.
