In my profession, I'd like a million dollars and believe I'm worth that much, but my employer isn't an entitled slob for not paying me that, nor is he responsible for the economic trends that decide my wages. I don't know where you come from, but here in the United States we have something we call a federal "minimum wage". That means that when your "cheap nanny" frees herself from your bondage, she will report you. You'll still be touting your illegal $5/hr bargain nanny, who you thought was so very fortunate to have a "job". And she'll have the last laugh and a fat bank account with all of your paid up back wages.

No one on this thread said they were paying $5/hr. The lowest range selection was $5-10, that includes up to $10/hr.

Bottom line, if people are losing jobs and experiencing pay cuts with a slumping economy, we all lose. That includes nannies and other domestic workers. Period. If parents who initially could afford a higher wage, cannot due to market conditions, the nanny will be paid less. Period. If there are nannies who would rather have any form of income versus "zero" some may take $5. Your ignorance of that and misplaced anger is just reflective of your worth- ZERO! I assume that when the economy bounces back all the MBs will be perfectly happy to pay higher market rates again right? $5/hour is never appropriate whether someone is willing to accept it or not, you know better and I hope you are better than that. If $5/hour is all that you can afford, you need to reconsider your priorities and alternative options.

OP there are FAR more nannies then employers out there. Most parents who post up a job offer will get dozens of responses. Maybe this particular woman figures she'll get a job faster if she is less expensive. I think it's ridiculous how people bring up child safety as if someone who charges $10 an hour is going to neglect or hurt your child. Many (non educated) childcare givers post $20/hour because they can. You don't need a degree to become a nanny and just about anyone can do it so if you can get over $15/hr you're going to try but it doesn't mean you're good at what you do or safe.
