I'm a nanny who babysits quite a bit on the side. I've found a family lookin for regular care one night a week, and after speaking to my references they have asked me to come do a (2 hour max) trial run tomorrow morning, to see how the children react to me (they are young, I will be the first non-family caregiver). In the past, parents have always tried to pay me for these trial runs an I have always refused, but they have also only been 30 mins or so of me hanging out with the kids with a parent in the other room. I don't know if I should still refuse payment for 1-2 hours of work. |
If you want to give away your time, I am sure they will be happy to accept. |
If you want to be respected as a professional, you do not give away your time for free. |
I would discuss payment for said trial. 2 hours is a long time. |
OP don't sell yourself short. Even though it's a personal type of job you should still be professional. They want you to come in for 2 hours as a trail run then yes, you get paid. Just like those who go through training at fast food restuarants still get paid even though they're sitting on the computer filling out things.
Why would you even refuse 30 minutes of pay? This is why parents think it's ok to skip extra pay when they're 15-30 minutes late. Don't ever refuse pay. You wasted your time and gas to go to the trail run, atleast make it worth it. |
Agree with the others. You should be paid for your time even in 30 minute increments. You should ask for and receive your full hourly rate for both hours. |
They'll think not so highly of you if they don't need to pay you. |
You are going to WORK for 2 hours. This is not an interview, it is a trial. It is like paid training for another type of position. Just because you start training, doesn't mean you will actually stick around and end up with the actual position. Paid trial is the same way. If they like you and the kid(s) are good, then you will stick around. By this point you should have discussed an hourly rate, and you would use this rate for the 2 hours. |
