Wasting time at work: not just for nannies? RSS feed

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2332171/ER-workers-spend-20-time-work-Facebook--INCREASES-higher-number-patients.html

"Researchers at the University of Florida observed 68 different workstations in one emergency department over 15 days and compared the time spent on Facebook with the work index, which was derived by hospital information systems.

They found that over the 15 days, 9,369 Facebook pages were visited over an accumulated 72.5 hours and staff spent one out of every five minutes on the social networking site.

For every hour an emergency department employee worked, they spent - on average - 12 minutes on Facebook. During the night shift - when the emergency department is at its busiest - usage was actually higher, with staff spending almost 20 minutes an hour on the site."

Ahhh, now let's rant some more about how horrible nannies who talk on the phone while they're walking with a stroller are, shall we?

Of course if you happen to have a nanny, you'd never engage in such dishonest behavior at your job, huh? Lol.
Thanks for sharing that, OP.

The Daily Mail is a tabloid.

Nannies are taking care of a kids. Children can run out of the park, get hurt, kidnapped, etc, and nannies shouldn't be sitting on their butts stalking Facebook pages neglecting them. I don't care about the survey because this isn't grade school where just because someone else does it that it suddenly makes it ok for a lazy nanny to do it.

Also, many people, especially those in office jobs, have a certain amount of work that needs to be done and so long as it gets completed within a certain time frame, it's ok to work at their own pace unlike nannies who can't just turn the switch on/off when it comes to working with children.

Btw, it's one thing to take a quick peak on your phone and another to sit, talk, text and lurk FB the whole time you're at the park WORKING.

Cheap parents have no business hiring the cheap sitters who are incapable of ungluing themselves from their cellphones.

Who said, "you get what you pay for"?

hahahahahaha

So the doctors, nurses, and administrators in this article do NOT have responsibility to children and adults who come into the emergency room? Their jobs are LESS vigilant than a nannies? Is that what you're proposing?

Also - this is not a survey, it's a study. They were observed, not polled.

Also, no one said it was okay for a nanny to be on FB 20 minutes out of every hour. Also these are not office workers who complete tasks at their own pace - they're the ENTIRE team of a hospital's emergency room. I imagine they have to do some switching on/off as well, don't you think?

And yeah PP, Daily Mail is a rag. So what? It's also the world's most popular news website (you can google that) so... not sure what your point is.

I knew there'd be at least one poster like this who completely missed the point. C'est la vie.

Okay OP, you win. I really don't give a rat's ass how much or little my MB does at work. I myself will do the best I can in my position for my charges.
Anonymous
Wait... OP... are you trying to justify ignoring your charges and playing on your iphone? Seriously?

It seems to me that OP is sharing an article that some of us may find interesting. Thank you, OP.

New Poster here.
Seems like no one is horribly shocked that at the busiest time in the emergency department 20 minutes of every hour is being spent on social media. No one finds this scary? This is not about justification on part of nannies.
At the same time the voices of horror when a child is playing on the jungle gym while a nanny is on her phone seems to send people bat shit crazy..

The educated do not use tabloids for their reference sources.

OP here and this is my train of thought too! No, nannies shouldn't be on their phones when they ought to be supervising their charges but clearly this emergency department shouldn't be on Facebook either! No outrage, though, towards their neglect of their duties. Curious.

Um, I guarantee you no stories from The Daily Mail ended up in my thesis but then this isn't an academic forum is it? It's a discussion forum. Is the difference not obvious to you?

I doubt you ever wrote a thesis.
