I was in a car accident several months ago (I was off duty, no kids involved). I wasn't doing anything specifically wrong (ie. was not on my cell phone, was not speeding, not under the influence, etc) and no citation was issued, but I was found to be at fault for the accident. I am now in the process of looking for a new job, one that will likely involve driving. I assume this kind of thing will show up on any sort of driving records check, (though I am not certain, any one with any insight on this would be appreciated!) do you think it will be a deal breaker? Would it help if I disclosed it before the records check? This accident is my only infraction. |
What exactly did you do wrong? |
I was making a left turn onto a busy intersection that did not have a light. I thought it was clear, but the road was curved and so I couldn't see a car coming, and got t-boned mid turn. No one was hurt, and all the cops did acknowledge that though it was technically my fault, it is a very tricky intersection (and I was unfamiliar with the area). |
I'd pull up my own record to see it. Great that no one got hurt. |
I am glad you weren't seriously injured OP.
Anyway, go to the DMV and order a copy of your driving record. Hopefully it is clear and if so, you can make copies for your job search. Good luck. |
There really nothing you can do about it. Will it hurt? Probably. If there are two candidates one with a clean driving record and one with an at fault accident or something on their record, then the one with the clean record will be chosen.
You may also run into a situation where if your next job involves an infant and you are a nanny who likes to drive around to do things that the parents may not be OK about this. Nanny trying to convince parents that a 4 month old needs social time with other nannies + nanny with bad driving record =nanny not allowed to drive to see her friends. |
Definitely disagree with this. If you get a copy that's clear, it's likely the accident just isn't on there. If you pass out a clean record, and then the parents double check and the accident is on there, there's no way you will be getting the job. I don't think you need to bring up the accident if you are not asked about it, but handing out a clean driving record is the same as lying about it. |
PP here. To clarify, if you get a clean copy, its likely the accident just isn't on there /yet/ |
It could be listed as a misdeamnor. I have one I was at a stop sign moved slightly forward to see around a curve saw a car coming so I backed up and she slammed into me. I was behind the sign. I moved my car was in a small town she knew the cops I was found guilty. It shows up as a misdemeanor failure to give a right away. No one has given be a hard time about it. I do have speeding tickets but all the people just said hey you live in northern va your going to get tickets commuting 30+ miles one way. |
OP, have you checked with your insurance agent about if you should expect this to show up at all? |
That's a good idea, I hadn't thought of that. I do know that the accident did not affect my insurance rates, and I did not get any points on my license. I've now had a family request a thorough background check (which includes driving records). I'm on the fence about the position, so I decided to just go ahead and approve it without mentioning the accident, and if it shows up and that's a deal breaker for them, then I'm fine accepting that it wasn't meant to be. |
as an mb, if a nanny candidate will explain what happened i am willing to consider |
