Nanny with tattoos or piercings... RSS feed

Since the Junk Food Nanny post has turned into a discussion on Nannys with tattoos, I was wondering how others feel about tattoos or piercings. As a professional mom in the work force (Director of Sales and Marketing for a large business firm in Southern California) I have never faced a problem having a number of tattoos on my arm, legs, and feet. I have always been valued for my work ethic and have gone very far in the corporate world. Our amazing nanny also has 5 or 6 tattoos in sight on her body (not sure how many I haven't seen) which would never be an issue. She is wonderful with my children, helps run a very organized home, and has fit in just fine at our children's events. Sorry, I am not sure why it bothers me so much to see such judgemental MBs hiring. I feel like judgmental attitudes are being passed on to the next generation by people like this.

I have six tattoos and 1/2in gauges. I plan on getting another large tattoo and two small tattoos along with enlarging my gauges. My employers don't seemed fazed by this but all my tattoos are easily hidden. It took the parents 6months to even realize I had gauges. I also work in Boston and from my experience we Bostonians tend to be less conservative than ppl from DC. I know a few nannies with full sleeves or leg pieces that have been with their families for years.

I love my tattoos and enjoy showing them off in the summer, they are apart of who I am. It is the parents right to chose a nanny they few comfortable, just said that they could possibly pass up a great nanny because of their outdated views.

I have 3 tattoos but only one is in plain sight. I have a small black one on my wrist. My boss has no problem with it. I would like to get more but I am careful about placement because I don't know what job I'll have in the future and I know some people have preconceived notions about tattoos. Personally, unless the tattoo is vulgar of offensive in nature (although my mom would say that's every tattoo lol), I don't see the problem.

I have a tattoo in top of my right foot, one on my wrist, and a tiny peach sign behind my ear. All very tasteful and all have meaning to me. They are part of who I am and by MB has never had judgement. She has asked me about the meaning of them and told me how cool they are...

I have quite a few piercings (mostly ears, nose, and belly), and one pretty large tattoo, and its honestly never been an issue. The tattoo can be covered easily if it needs to be, and most don't even notice my nose piercing. If a family takes issue with these things, that's not a problem, we just aren't a good fit. I've always worked for the uber liberal, crunchy, AP parents and I love it!

I'm sorry but I just find tattoos so "low class" and to be honest, trashy.

+1 if they're visible and all over I wouldn't hire you. I think it's a disrespect to your body to ink it all up and I don't want my kids thinking we condone doing so. If they want one when they're 18+ and paying their own bills then thats good and well, but until then, not in my house.

I have two tattoos. Both are small and fairly out of the way. One to commemorate the time I spent living in another country, the other to remind me of my (deceased) grandmother. Yes, such low class and trashy reasons to get a tattoo I know.

How is that any different from parents saying they don't want to hire an overweight nanny?! Everyone has their preferences and is welcome to hire whomever they want. Just because employment discrimination isn't legal doesn't mean it doesn't happen. And as sad as it is we all make judgments and discriminate over things that are different from our own morals/values/way of life. We all do it. Cut the pc bull crap, and own up to it.

Oh you're so right. Because "everyone" discriminates over superficial crap, we shouldn't speak out against it, look down on it, check our own assumptions and judgments regularly, or address it in any way - we should just let it continue. I refuse to have anyone of East Asian origin in my house because those are not my values and I don't want my kids to think we condone it! NOT IN MY HOUSE.

You keep hitting the nail on the head. In my house I have the right to hire who I want. I also have the right to tell my children what they can and cannot do. In doing so, I'll decide who will be coming over to my house to care for them. I won't always have control over what my children are exposed to, but who comes into my home, I absolutely have a say in.

We all have morals and beliefs for a reason. Are we supposed to throw all of that away to save a few feelings. How about we grow a backbone and learn that not everyone will like you and that's just life.
