I am under the impression that I am required by law to have a workers comp plan for my nanny in DC. If you have this, how much are you paying? I have heard everything from $300 to the most recent quote of $2,000 annually. WTF? people actually pay 2k a year for this? Please advise and recommend your insurance agent.

Is this different in MD or VA?
|
I have no idea what MD or VA require. |
$400ish per year in dc |
OP, did you already ask your agent? |
OP, if your nanny is injured while working at your house, you could lose a lot more than $2,000, she could sue you and take everything you have. Protect yourself. |
I'd love to know if anyone is offering a stand alone policy. I searched for a few weeks when we hired our nanny, but no one would offer it as a stand alone policy. I'd either have to switch my homeowners' policy to one of the companies that offered workers comp or go through a payroll service (and we already handle our own payroll and taxes). |
This was our experience too. We did not want to switch our homeowners insurance, so we went via the "DC Risk Pool" plan. Price seemed high, but what choice do you have, legally you have to have he insurance. |
In MD, there's a basic fee, and then a percentage based on payroll. So, the range of prices you've heard probably reflect the salary range, and possibly whether someone has had claims before. |
And whether someone has a 30 hour a week nanny or a 50 hour a week nanny and a 2 day a week housekeeper. ![]() |
What is the "DC Risk Pool" plan? Is this an actual plan? I'm not able to find any information about it. Thanks! |
We use Breedlove to do our nanny payroll and they have what I guess you would call a vendor that we went through to get a pretty comprehensive worker's comp policy. Besides it being a law in DC (I didn't know this, Breedlove told me when I first signed up), I agree with other posters that, God forbid, your nanny injures herself in your home and takes legal action, it could be way more expensive for you than the insurance plan. I believe ours comes out to about $60 or $70 per month. I admittedly didn't have the time to research policies; I am sure there are less expensive ones. |
