How do I run a background check on nanny?

Hi-

I'm doing a nanny share and we found a nanny - so happy! Now we need to run a background check and I'm not sure how to do so.... it seems the nanny needs to actually be on care.com to use their background checks (we found ours on this site), and I've read mixed reviews about SitterCity. Any advice?

The background checks on sitter city and care.com really are just identity verification/checks, not state/federal background checks. If you want a state/federal background check she'd have to get fingerprinted and pay for the background check.

I'm not sure how that would work for employers of a nanny, but I'm assuming if you contact your local MVA or police station that does fingerprints they would be able to explain how it is done.

I would use the platinum one on enannysource.com. It looks great and covers everything I want, including driving record and local criminal searches. About $90.

Keep in mind that you may pay ninety dollars to run a background check on a nanny, then once she starts working for you, you may find out you guys just aren't a suitable match for each other. If that happens, you cannot ask her to compensate you for your background check fee.

I had this happen to me once.
A lady hired me and ran an extensive background/credit check on me which I had no problem with. She claimed she spent $120 for everything including my fingerprints which she said she would pay for.

Fast forward, two weeks later and it became crystal clear this job was the job from hell.
Late parents, late paychecks, "job creep"...you name it, I had it.

So after I left, she demanded I refund her the background check fee. For obvious reasons, I declined and she threatened to sue me via Judge Judy. {Yes, she actually SAID that!!!}
I am petrified of JJ so I admit, I was a bit nervous, but honestly I didn't have the extra $120 to reimburse her so I told her to go ahead and sue me. Okay, I admit, I said it a bit sarcastically.

Walked out the door and never heard from her again.

And Judge Judy never called.

Have her go to the local sheriff's office (or wherever they do fingerprints) and get fingerprints and a local state background check done (I believe they call it a personal review). Its state only, for federal checks you need a CJIS authorization number.
