Interview Suggestions RSS feed

We're planning on interviewing some au pairs this weekend and I'm feeling a little overwhelmed with what all to ask them. We have a almost 2 year old son that the au pair would be taking care of. Any suggestions for interview questions? Thanks!!

Think about what you want to find out from the Au Pair and then use questions to establish this:

you want to know her experience: have you worked with children before, how many, job role?

What she is like to live with: what do you like to do in your spaire time? what jobs do you do at home (this will also let you check if you will have to teach her how to make a bed/do the dishes ect), would you describe yourself as tidy? messy?

If she will need lots of guidence: have you ever lived away from home before?

Think about what you want to know about your Au pair and this will guide you in what questions to ask

What will be her schedule, OP?

OP Here. Usually her schedule will be 9-6 or 8-5 M-F with an occasional alteration here or there. My husband is also in and out of the house during the day.

I'm really concerned with assessing whether she would get bored/frustrated/lonely taking care of a toddler all day since I know it's not easy

OP, has there been a caregiver previous to this one?

OP Here - just me/my husband/family members until recently when he started daycare.

Have you visited the aupairmom.com site? There's lots of good articles there to find your AP.

Also search the nanny forums here for interview questions. There are several threads and some good questions that work well with AP's too.

Ask if she smokes, even socially? Some APs don't consider themselves smokers if it's just one while out drinking...

Ask how she makes friends? Is she the initiator or the follower?
