Nanny Salary for Twins? RSS feed

Can anyone shed insight on this? It's my impression nannies in DC are paid between 16-18/hr for a single newborn/toddler. What is the rate for twins?

You can offer $20 with great benefits (PTO, Sick days, etc) and see if you can find someone you like.

Find someone you like, and ask her.

Twice the work, twice the pay.

This is the best advice you'll get.

Personally I make $20-22/hr for twins during the daytime. (I'm involved in newborn care as well, so overnight rates are higher.)

But that doesn't make that rate the norm- just means that for me, my experience, education and past salary history support it. I don't claim every nanny should make this caring for twins. The average I've seen for someone with decent qualifications is usually $18-20, but again it really depends on the candidate and the job. I also don't usually work more than 40-42.5 hours/week so not as much OT as some jobs require.

+1

Depends on location, how many hours per week you need, benefits offered, and the candidate you select.

The better the MB can present herself, the better the caregiver, she can attract for the position.

This seems to be common recurring advice on this board lately and it makes no sense to me. As a nanny would you go in to a job interview without having any idea of what a fair rate would be? No. But that is what you are asking of these MBs. Any time I'm about to spend a great deal of money on something I make sure to do plenty of research to make sure I am getting a fair deal and a good product, that is all these parents are trying to do.

Of course a Nanny should know what a fair rate is, but that doesn't mean the parents should be totally in the dark about it as well.

Yes and no.

Yes the parents should have some idea of going rates before settling down into interview territory, at which point they should ask the candidate what her normal rates are.

But no, we can't always give an accurate representation on this board. I say I make $20/hr caring for one infant (true...) and people here jump up saying I'm a liar because they make $15 - but we have different backgrounds, work history, education, professional presentation, financial considerations, extra tasks we are willing or not willing to do, etc. that can lead to an enormous differentiation in pay. The type of candidate an MB gravitates toward will be more telling of the going rates in her PREFERRED CANDIDATE POOL than the anonymous replies here.

OP, if you're still feeling a little perplexed and uncertain, my advice is to find two or three nannies you like the look of on Craigslist, Sittercity, Care.com, neighborhood listservs, whatever you're using, and inquire about their rate for infant twins. You'll have a much better sense of how much the type of nanny you're looking for (legal/illegal, native English speaker/not, driver/not, college degree/not, age, experience, professional goals, etc) will be charging by doing that.

As the PP said, the cost of a nanny is directly related not only to the "market rate" but also to what you are looking for IN a candidate.

If you will be happy with someone who speaks little english, doesn't drive, hasn't had any formal childcare education, is possibly illegal, and is willing to focus as much on cleaning your home as she is on caring for your children, you will likely be able to pay less than "market rate".

If you want someone who speaks english, has some childcare education, can drive, has references and recent experience, is probably legal, and is not willing to spend 50% of her time cleaning since she prefers to focus on childcare, you will pay about average "market rate".

If you want a native english speaker, who drives, has more extensive childcare education, has extensive experience and references, is legal, and spends her time caring for/educating/nurturing children and doing housekeeping essential to their well-being ONLY, you will pay more than "market rate".

OP, $16-$18 for a single child is above average in DC. Also, the PP who says twice the pay for twice the work is wrong because twins are not twice the work. That's just silly.

In DC, $14-$16/hr is typical for a single child. I'd offer a candidate $16-$18/hr for twins, depending on her experience and the age of the children.

Silly 13:50 never had twins. When she does, she can report back how twins are not twice the work. Oh yeah, she'll be scooting off to K St, 'cause she can't handle it at home.

Wrong, 23:22.

MB of twins who is also a twin. I know more than you ever will about twins, child.
